Southwest Box Elder Elk Unit Approved

A new elk management unit was established in southwest Nebraska and the dates for a hunting season there were set by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission at a meeting in Lincoln July 24.

The Box Elder Elk Management Unit include southeast Lincoln County and small parts of Dawson and Frontier counties, an area of about 250 square miles.

The hunting season will be Sept. 28 - Oct. 27, 2002. There will be four either sex permits and eight antlerless-only permits available, in addition to two either sex landowner and four antlerless-only landowner permits.

The application period for Box Elder Elk Unit hunting permits will be Aug. 5 - 16. Only Nebraska residents may apply for a Nebraska elk hunting permit and only one permit is allowed in a lifetime. A non-refundable fee of $7 must be included with each application. Do not send cash with the application, only checks, money orders and MasterCard or Visa may be used for payment. Do not send the $130 permit fee with the application, successful applicants will be notified after the drawing and will have one month to remit the full permit fee.

Permit applications must be received at the Commission?s Lincoln Office before 5:00 p.m., Aug. 16, and online applications must be made prior to midnight CDT on Aug. 16 to be included in the permit drawing.
