The Department of Environmental Management announces the hunting regulations for the 2010-2011 seasons. There are several changes this year regarding deer hunting and the development of deer management zones. The DEM remains committed to managing the growing deer population by focusing on the harvest of female deer and encouraging private land hunting. Two new areas have opened up for archery deer hunting, Tunk Hill in the Scituate Reservoir property and Snake Den State Park in Johnston. Most of the other changes are strictly date changes reflecting the calendar shift.

The Department has developed deer management zones to recognize and achieve harvest and management strategies for deer in Rhode Island. Zone 1 comprises urbanized coastal areas, in which there are large populations of deer and auto strikes are prevalent. Zone 2 includes primarily inland locations. DEM remains committed to encouraging more private landowners to allow hunters to hunt on their property during deer-hunting seasons. As an incentive, those hunting on private land in Zone 1 from November 6-November 28 are eligible for one free replacement antlerless tag upon checking two antlerless deer. Hunters are reminded that annual written permission is required for all deer hunting on private lands. DEM has developed a courtesy card, available on the DEM website, for hunters and landowners to sign, which gives the dates for permissions and contains A Hunter's Pledge regarding principles of conduct.

The "All Outdoors" permit package, which must be purchased from DEM's Division of Licensing for $112.50, entitles hunters to take up to 12 mainland deer during the established seasons. A limit of 250 permit packages will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Information on the permit packages can be obtained on the DEM website, www.dem.ri.gov. Permits are not yet available.

This year's deer hunting seasons are as follows:

  • State land mainland archery - September 15, 2010 - January 31, 2011
  • State land mainland muzzleloading - November 6-28, 2010 and December 26, 2010-January 2, 2011
  • State land mainland shotgun - December 4-12, 2010 and December 26, 2010 - January 2, 2011
