Ever want to go fishing or hunting at the last minute, but you had to hold off from going because you couldn't get a license?

That won't happen ever again if you're planning to hunt or fish in Maine. Now you can purchase and print your Maine license from any computer that is linked to the Internet, anytime. The online licensing system is always open, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife in conjunction with InforMe, Maine's self-funded web portal, and MCI, one of the worlds largest communications companies, have joined together to bring a new dimension to online license purchases in Maine. Now not only can you purchase your license online, but you can print it out, and use it immediately. Previously, when you purchased a license online, it would be printed out and mailed to the purchaser.

Online purchase and printing is the latest step of the Maine Online Sportsman's Electronic System, or MOSES. MOSES enables the Department to provide consumers convenient one-stop shopping for all license types and registrations along with improved auditing and enforcement. MCI is currently developing automated licensing solutions for the states of Montana, Texas and Maine, and has completed them for Washington and New York.

Since becoming the first state fish and wildlife agency to offer online license purchases online in 1997, the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife continues to improve and increase the services available online. Currently, in conjunction with InformMe, the department provides over 50 online services to customers.

Most recently, approximately 15 percent of all moose lottery applications year were purchased on line in 2003, and more than 28% of all turkey lottery chances and permits were purchased online in 2003.

The number of licenses sold has increased as well. In 2000, 2,809 licenses were sold online, and in March of 2003 alone, over 1,000 licenses were sold online. Last year, a total of 8,055 licenses were sold online.

Online sales, mean savings to the state and to license holders due to increased efficiency. In person and phone requests for permit applications have dropped. Data entry, manual fulfillment and scanning of licenses have dropped significantly. Staff time and processing delays have been reduced for the any deer, turkey and moose lotteries. Mailing costs have been reduced. Counter and mail license sales have been reduced dramatically since online service has expanded as well.
