Licensed Massachusetts black bear hunters took to the woods of western Massachusetts during the September 3 through 21 early season and emerged with 110 bruins which were tagged and brought to MassWildlife check stations. During the same season one year ago, 99 bears were checked.

Staff from MassWildlife's Western District office in Pittsfield recorded data from 65 animals brought in from the surrounding Berkshire hills. The largest, a boar weighing 410 pounds field-dressed, was taken by Howard Baker of Pittsfield.

Rifles, muzzleloaders, archery equipment and certain hand guns were allowed during the September season. The largest bear taken by bow and arrow was a boar that dressed out at 340 pounds. Of the remaining stations, the Connecticut Valley District office checked 22 bears, Bitzer Hatchery in Montague 21 and the Central District office in West Boylston 2. The season was open in Worcester County as well as Berkshire, Hampden, Hampshire and Franklin counties to the west. None of the bears were reported taken in Worcester County despite an increasing bear population there. For more information contact Jim Cardoza, 508.792.7270 x124.
