The province is expanding and standardizing archery seasons for white-tailed deer as part of a sustainable wildlife management program.

"Expanding deer populations mean that we can further increase hunting opportunities in many parts of the province," said Ramsay. "We are also making it easier for hunters to know when seasons for white-tailed deer open and close."

For the fall 2007 deer hunting season, the first archery season opening date for most Wildlife Management Units will be:

  • * September 1 in northwestern Ontario (residents only);
  • * October 1 in southern, south-central and northeastern Ontario.

For areas with post-gun season archery hunts, the last archery closing date will be:

  • * December 15 for south-central Ontario;
  • * December 31 for southern Ontario.

The changes were posted on the Environmental Registry for public comment earlier this year and are in effect for the fall 2007 deer hunting season.

As of September 1, 2007, an additional 13 municipalities have been added to the list of areas where Sunday hunting is permitted, while two municipalities have been removed.

More details on the deer hunting and Sunday gun hunting changes are available on the ministry's website at ontario.ca/mnr.
