Ohio State Preemption Law is Valid Concerning Firearms, Components and Ammunition

The Ohio Supreme Court has ruled (5-2) that the state's preemption law is valid. The City of Cleveland had sued over the 2007 law that replaced the confusing plethora of local laws concerning firearms. In that claim, Cleveland unsuccessfully made the case that the state and federal government had not done enough to regulate self-defense rights, leaving the city free to regulate everyone who happened to be inside its city limits.

Ohio Whitetail Weekend Hunt Successful

Hunters killed 21,064 deer during the weekend of gun hunting, December 18-19, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Wildlife.

The extra weekend of gun hunting was first offered in 2006 in response to hunters' request for additional weekend days to pursue white-tailed deer, the state's number one big game animal. In 2009, hunters took 19,900 deer during those two days.

Ohio's Youth Hunters had Successful Weekend

Young hunters across Ohio again enjoyed success during the seventh annual Youth Deer-Gun Season, held Saturday and Sunday, November 20-21, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Wildlife. Hunters, aged 17 and under, harvested 9,024 deer during the special two-day season, as compared to 9,331 last year.

Counties reporting the greatest number of deer killed were Tuscarawas-434, Knox-416, Holmes-337, Washington-274, Licking-267, Guernseyand Harrison-265, Belmont-222, and Ashlandand Coshocton-196.

Ohio Deer Gun Season Opens Nov. 29th

Ohio's popular deer-gun season opens statewide on Monday, November 29, offering hunters a full week to harvest a whitetail. The upcoming season will again include an extra weekend of gun hunting on December 18-19, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Wildlife.

Ohio Closes Preserve for Controlled Hunts

According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Natural Areas and Preserves, Lake KatharineState Nature Preserve in JacksonCountywill be closed to the public on November 29 through December 1 due to special controlled deer hunts.

These hunts are being held in cooperation with ODNR's Division of Wildlife. Special permits were awarded through a lottery drawing held earlier this fall. There are no more permits available.

Ohio Youth Deer Hunt Opens Nov. 20-21

Ohio's youth deer-gun hunting season will be held Saturday and Sunday, November 20-21, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Wildlife.

Young hunters killed 9,331 deer during last year's two-day season. The Division of Wildlife anticipates more than 40,000 young hunters will participate in the upcoming hunt.

Ohio Furbearer Season Opens Nov 10th

Ohio hunters and trappers preparing to pursue furbearers will find good populations of these animals during the 2010-2011 season, which begins for most furbearing species on November 10, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Wildlife.<

"Food sources and habitat conditions for furbearers have been good this year across Ohio," said Suzie Prange, wildlife biologist with the Division of Wildlife. "Fur takers can expect a good season."

Ohio Fall Turkey Season in Full Swing

Hunters harvested 295 wild turkeys during the first five days of Ohio's fall wild turkey hunting season, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Wildlife. The season opened on October 9 and will run through November 28.

Last year, hunters killed 438 birds in the same time period. The top 10 counties for wild turkeys killed to date are: Ashtabula-24; Coshocton-20; Muskingum-13; Guernsey-12; Knox, Harrison, and Trumbull-11; Jackson-10; and Clermont, Holmes, and Washington-9.

Ohio Fall Turkey Season Opens Oct. 9th

Fall wild turkey hunting opens in 48 Ohio counties on Saturday, October 9, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Wildlife. The season continues through Sunday, November 28.

Ohio Archery Deer Season Begins Sept. 25th

Approximately 300,000 bowhunters, representing more than half of all Ohioans who hunt deer, are expected to participate in the statewide archery deer hunting season that opens September 25, according the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Wildlife.
