New York DEC January Deer Hunt in Suffolk County
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation today announced procedures for hunting deer on Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) managed lands during the annual January firearms deer season in parts of Suffolk County.
The Suffolk County January 2011 firearms season dates are January 3-7, 10-14, 17-21, 24-28 and 31. Firearms deer hunting is not permitted in Suffolk County on weekends. The season is open in parts of the six easternmost towns of Suffolk County.
In addition to a big-game hunting license, hunters must obtain a town permit and a signed form that certifies that the hunter has permission to hunt from the landowner. A hunter must also have an unfilled carcass tag from a regular big game license, Special Second Deer Permit or a Deer Management Permit for Deer Management Unit 1C.
To hunt for deer on DEC-managed lands, hunters must enter a drawing. Entries must be received at NYSDEC-Deer Drawing, PO Box 659, Ridge NY 11961-0659, by 4:45 p.m., Monday, Dec. 6. Entries can also be hand delivered to the Ridge hunter check station by the above date. There are no applications for this drawing. The Ridge hunter check station is located on Randall Road in Ridge just north of where this road intersects Middle Country Road (Route 25).
To enter, hunters must send a No. 10 (4 1/8" x 9 ½") envelope, containing a self-addressed, stamped, No. 10 or No. 9 return envelope. The hunter must write his back tag number on the back of the return envelope. Entries submitted in other than No. 10 envelopes, or including other than No. 10 or No. 9 return envelopes will be rejected. Each hunter may only send one entry, but each member of a two-hunter party may send one entry.
Drawing entrants will receive a notice telling them when to appear at the Ridge Hunter Check Station to make a reservation to hunt on DEC-managed lands. Reservations will be made Dec. 20-23, 2010.
