Youth Deer Hunt Day November 22
The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Division of Fish and Wildlife reminds families that properly licensed and supervised youth hunters will be allowed to hunt for one deer on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2003.
Special Area Deer Permits Available
According to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Division of Fish and Wildlife, leftover lottery deer permits for special areas will be available beginning Oct. 27 for the following zones: 37, 52, 57, 58, 61, and 67. Permits will be available from 9 a.m. - noon and from 1 - 4 p.m. at selected Division field offices.
Deer Season off to Excellent Start
The first harvest estimates for the early fall bow deer season (September 6 - 26) and statewide bow season opener (September 27) are in, and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's Division of Fish and Wildlife (Division) reports the season is off to an excellent start. Although numbers for the traditional statewide fall bow opener are down some from last year (745 compared to 983), overall tallies are up as 6,235 deer have been taken by archers through September 27 compared with 4,685 deer taken by bow hunters during the equivalent period in 2002.
DEP Commissioner Says Bear Sterilization could be Inhumane
Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Commissioner Bradley M. Campbell released the following statement in response to the New Jersey Animal Rights Alliance suggestion that New Jersey bears be injected with Neutersol, a chemical approved for the sterilization of puppies.
Double Check Your Black Bear App
"Numerous applications are being received that have either been filled in incorrectly or are incomplete," said Division Director Martin J. McHugh. "As a result, they are being returned for corrections and resubmission. Prospective bear hunters should realize that all of the information requested on the application is extremely important and we ask that you take the time to complete these applications carefully."
Black Bear Applications Due September 30th
A total of 10,000 special black bear hunting permits will be available to properly licensed firearm hunters. A random lottery will be held if the number of applicants exceeds the special permit quota. Permit applications from interested hunters must be received no later than September 30, 2003.
DEP Orders Quarantine of Two Hunting Preserves
The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) yesterday ordered the quarantine of all deer, elk and exotic sheep on two hunting preserves owned by a Mr. Peter Bubalo in Hardyston Township and Sparta in Sussex County for having imported deer from out of state without a required permit.
2003-2004 Game Code Approved
This year, a deer management strategy of population reduction is planned for 54.8 percent of the deer range in order to lessen economic losses associated with deer damage to landscape plantings or gardens, agricultural crops and deer/vehicle collisions. A six-day, black bear, special permit hunting season is approved for the area of New Jersey north of Interstate Route 78 and west of Interstate Route 287 for December 8-13, 2003 with a bag limit of one bear of either sex and any age.
Outstanding White-tailed Deer Program
The Outstanding White-tailed Deer Program, jointly sponsored by the Division of Fish and Wildlife, the New Jersey State Federation of Sportsmen's Clubs and the United Bowhunters of New Jersey, is designed to recognize the quality of the state's deer resource and the sportsmen and women who hunt for them. The program was initiated in 1964 and includes categories for the largest deer taken (based on field dressed weight) and finest antler development. Awards are given for the current season's top scorers.
Reminder Regarding Community-Based Deer Management
The Department of Environmental Protection's (DEP) Division of Fish and Wildlife reminds airport operators, municipalities and county boards of agriculture that they must submit applications for Community-Based Deer Management (CBDM) at least 120 days prior to the proposed date of implementation.
