The Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) will host an introductory muzzleloading class Jan. 26 from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Clark County Shooting Park Education Center. Muzzleloaders are any firearm that loads the bullet and propellent through the muzzle and can range from the historical rifles like those you see in movies about Daniel Boone and other American frontiersman to more modern "inline" muzzleloaders .

"There is something nostalgic about loading and shooting a muzzleloading rifle. It's quite different from shooting a rifle that uses a modern cartridge. You pour your powder in, use your ramrod to seat your projectile and when you squeeze the trigger you get lots of white smoke," said Doug Nielsen, Conservation Education supervisor for NDOW. "Muzzleloading, whether you hunt or just shoot at targets, is a fun challenge. I really enjoy it."

The muzzleloading class will touch on the various types of muzzleloading rifles available today, safety, and techniques for loading and shooting rifles built using historic and modern designs. Participants can expect the class to last approximately three hours and will have the opportunity to load and shoot flintlock, percussion cap and modern in-line rifles. The class also will include a brief lecture and instruction in the proper cleaning and storage of muzzleloading firearms. There is no charge for the class. Seating is limited, so reservations are required. For information and registration contact Martin Olson at (702) 486-5127 x 3501.
