A parking lot and surrounding area in the northwest portion of Branched Oak Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is closed to target shooting for safety reasons, according to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

All access to the lot is closed temporarily, but the closure of the lot and surrounding area to target shooting is permanent.

Shooters have been using the lot, on West Rock Creek Road west of Northwest 126th Street, for setting up and shooting at targets.

Safety risks to hunters, staff and other users near the area posed by frequent shooting, as well as noise and trash complaints and vandalism, led to closure of the area for this use. Many WMAs in southeast Nebraska allow target shooting on all or portions of the areas.

Refer to the 2009 Nebraska Guide to Hunting and Public lands for specific regulations for each area. Areas closed to target shooting should be posted with regulation signs.
