Bighorn Sheep Permit Lottery
Hunters have until 5:00 p.m. Aug. 19 to apply for the chance to take a trophy bighorn sheep during Nebraska's 2002 bighorn sheep season, Nov. 30 - Dec. 22. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commissioners authorized the issuance of two bighorn hunting permits for 2002. Last March, Bert Kizer, of Woodstock, Ga., bid $55,000 for this year's bighorn sheep auction permit and walked away the permit winner at the Safari Club International Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Deer Permits Available
There are still plenty of 2002 Nebraska deer hunting permits available and now both resident and nonresident hunters who have not yet obtained their first deer hunting permit, as well as those who were unsuccessful in obtaining a permit in a draw unit, can purchase their first permit, including remaining permits in draw units.
Black Bear Possibly From Wyoming
The black bear observed near Henry in the Panhandle west of Scottsbluff on May 15 and 16 may be the same bear captured by the Wyoming Department of Fish and Game on the Warren Air Force base on the west edge of Cheyenne, Wyoming on Tuesday May 21, according to Gary Schlichtemeier, district wildlife manager at the Game and Parks Commission's district office in Alliance.
CWD Positive White Tail
The Game and Parks Commission today reported that a 5-year-old white-tailed doe culled in Sioux County by Commission staff has tested positive for chronic wasting disease, bringing to 15 the total number of wild deer in the state that have tested positive for the fatal disease.
Black Bear Sighted
A young black bear was observed Wednesday evening and Thursday morning near the small Nebraska Panhandle town of Henry, west of Scottsbluff along the Wyoming-Nebraska border, according to Gary Schlichtemeier, Wildlife Manager in the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission's District Office in Alliance.
2002 Big Game Hunting Guide Available
The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission's 2002 Big Game Hunting Guide is being mailed to every hunter who purchased a deer permit last year by mail or over-the-counter at a Commission office. Those who purchased their permit online at the Commission's web site are being sent an e-mail with a link to the online brochure. Those who want to see and/or download the brochure online can find it online now at the Commission's web site at www.outdoornebraska.org.
Preliminary Firearm Deer Hunting Season Figures
Preliminary figures indicate 39,398 deer were taken during the 2001 regular firearm season, a hunter success rate of about 54 percent, according to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.
Mountain Lion Sighting
The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission has confirmed the sighting of a mountain lion in Brown County on December 1.
Bighorn Herds Expanding
Bighorn sheep herds in the Pine Ridge and Wildcat Hills in the Nebraska Panhandle have added to their numbers with the birth of lambs this spring and early summer, according to Gary Schlichtemeier, district wildlife manager at the Game and Parks Commission's district office in Alliance.
Special Archery Deer Hunts
The Game and Parks Commission is offering a unique deer hunting opportunity to 40 archers interested in helping reduce the deer population on 350 acres of timber bordering the Platte River in Sarpy County.
