The Nebraska Game and Parks Commissioners recently set the dates for the 2007 pronghorn hunting seasons, continued buck-only seasons in all units except the archery season again this year, reduced permit numbers in two management units, and combined two management units.

Kit Hams, the Commission's big game program manager, said surveys indicate pronghorn numbers "continue to be stable but low in all units in spite of little doe harvest the previous three years. Hunter success and the number of adult bucks – those 2.5 years and older -- are low in several units."

During the 2006 pronghorn firearm hunting season hunter success was 69 percent compared to 64 percent in 2005, muzzleloader success increased from 59 percent in 2005 to 63 percent last year, and archery success remained at 13 percent.

2007 Nebraska Pronghorn Hunting Seasons:

Archery Pronghorn Season: Aug. 20-Nov. 9 and Nov. 19- Dec. 31, but closed during firearm pronghorn season in all areas open to firearm pronghorn hunting. The archery season is open statewide. The archery permit will allow the bowhunter to take one pronghorn of either sex, except only pronghorn with horns longer than its ears may be taken on the Bessey Ranger District of the Nebraska National Forest.

Muzzleloader Pronghorn Season: Sept. 15-Sept. 30. The North Sioux muzzleloader unit is the same as the North Sioux firearm unit. The Prairie muzzleloader unit includes all areas of the state except the North Sioux Unit and the Bessey Ranger District of the Nebraska National Forest in Blaine and Thomas counties. There will be 35 buck-only permits available in the North Sioux Muzzleloader Unit and 65 buck-only permits in the Prairie Muzzleloader Unit.
