Utah's 2011 Sportsman Permit Apps Available Nov. 1st

Applications for next year's most prized Utah hunting permits — 2011 sportsman permits — will be available by Nov. 1.

Only Utah residents may apply for sportsman permits. One sportsman permit is offered for each of the following species: Desert bighorn ram, Rocky Mountain bighorn ram, buck deer, buck pronghorn, bull elk, bull moose, hunter's choice bison, hunter's choice Rocky Mountain goat, black bear, cougar and wild turkey.

Montana Offers New Hunting Opportunities in 2010

Montana's deer, elk and antelope regulations—the hunter's bible—is newly formatted this year and includes some new hunting opportunities for deer, elk and antelope for the upcoming season.

"We made the changes in response to requests for simpler, easier to read hunting regulations," said Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks spokesman Ron Aasheim.

Wisconsin Uses DNA to Confirm 4 Cougars in State During Past 2 Years

A few drops of blood, preserved by an alert warden, proves that while one male cougar was tracking through St. Croix and Dunn counties this past December, another male cougar was moving near the Flambeau River, 125 miles to the north.

This cougar, crossing a road, was spotted by a female bus driver east of Park Falls. Warden Dan Michels responded and followed the animal's tracks into a cedar swamp where he spotted tiny blood drops behind the cougar's tracks. He collected them in a test tube, froze the contents and submitted them for DNA analysis.

South Dakota Mtn Lion Season Changes Set for Discussion in October

The South Dakota Game Fish and Parks Commission proposed an increased harvest limit for the upcoming 2011 South Dakota Mountain Lion Season.

The proposed season would run from Jan. 1 - March 31, 2011 and have a lion harvest limit of 45, or 30 female mountain lions.

The season proposal includes an increased license fee of $25, up from $15.

The Commission also proposed to open Custer State Park's boundaries to mountain lion hunters, and to give those hunters the option of using dogs.

Utah Cougar Rules Proposed for 3 Years

If you're interested in Utah's cougars, pay attention to the Division of Wildlife Resource's latest cougar hunting proposals—they'll be in effect for the next three years.

"Keeping the hunting rules and permit numbers consistent will give our efforts to manage cougars more time to work," says Kevin Bunnell, mammals coordinator for the DWR. "And that will result in future recommendations that will be best for the cougars and for the animals the cougars prey on."

South Dakota Mtn Lion Plan Available for Review

The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department is offering citizens an opportunity to review a draft of a new five-year management plan for mountain lions.

The South Dakota Mountain Lion Management Plan 2010-2015 describes how state authorities propose to manage mountain lions in South Dakota. The draft is available for review through July 26. Interested residents are encouraged to submit comments on the plan by that deadline.

Wyoming Mountain Lion Season Meetings
The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is holding public information gathering meetings and has opened a comment period to gather public input on these proposals: changes to license issuance regulations, 2010-2011 mountain lion seasons and rules governing contested cases before the Game and Fish Commission.
Indiana Confirms Mtn Lion in Greene County
A mountain lion has been confirmed in a rural part of Greene County east of Bloomfield as a result of a new Department of Natural Resources policy designed to systematically collect data and evaluate reported sightings of such animals.
