Missouri Fall Turkey Outlook Good

Above-average spring and summer rainfall held down nesting success for Missouri's wild turkey flock again this year, but there are bright spots in the picture. Perhaps the brightest is the fact that fall turkey hunters have little competition for a still-abundant and challenging quarry.

Missouri Revisits Elk Restoration Around Peck Ranch CA

The Missouri Conservation Commission has directed Missouri Conservation Department (MDC) staff to reinitiate plan development that would enable the agency to restore elk around Peck Ranch Conservation Area (CA) while addressing concerns raised nearly a decade ago.

At the July 16 Commission meeting in Cape Girardeau, MDC Resource Scientist Lonnie Hansen presented a report on an elk-restoration feasibility study conducted in 2000. That effort was suspended due to the emerging issue of chronic wasting disease and concerns about adequate habitat.

Missouri Changes Tag Availability for 2010 Deer Seasons

Missouri's 2010 fall deer and turkey hunting seasons and regulations are mostly the same as last year. However, unlimited antlerless permits will be available in two additional counties, and regulations at one conservation area have changed to help in surveillance for chronic wasting disease (CWD).

Missouri Youth Hunters Set Deer Harvest Record
Wind blew, snow flew, and the mercury dropped to bone-chilling depths during the late portion of Missouri's youth deer hunting season. But in spite of beastly weather, young hunters managed to check nearly as many deer as they did during the same period last year, bringing Missouri's youth deer harvest to its highest level ever.
Missouri Muzzleloader Season Sets Record
Hunters set a new record with 15,907 deer killed during the muzzleloader portion of Missouri's 2009 firearms deer season, Dec. 19-29. This year's record topped the previous one set in 2007 by 2,535. It topped the 2008 harvest by 5,653.
