CWD Found in One Maryland Deer

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) received laboratory confirmation on February 10, 2011 that a white-tailed deer harvested in Maryland tested positive for chronic wasting disease (CWD). This is the first confirmed case of CWD in Maryland. A hunter in Allegany County reported taking the deer on November 27, 2010 in Green Ridge State Forest. Maryland is now one of 20 other states and Canadian provinces with CWD documented in deer, elk or moose.

Maryland Elk Neck State Park Rifle Range Set to Reopen Jan. 17th

Elk Neck State Forest has announced that the rifle and shotgun ranges on site are tentatively scheduled to reopen at 4 p.m. on January 17, 2011. The date is subject to delays due to inclement weather. Please contact the forest office prior to using the facility to ensure that it is open.

The pistol range will close for several weeks beginning January 17 for renovations and repairs. During this closure, the rifle and shotgun ranges will remain open for use during normal hours of operation.

Maryland Deer Gun Season Has Ended - Muzzleloader Opens Dec. 18th

Maryland deer hunters endured less than favorable weather conditions for the two-week deer firearm season and harvested an estimated 40,694 deer — a 9 percent decrease from last year's harvest for the same period. The total included 13,605 antlered deer and 27,089 antlerless deer. Included in the totals were 516 antlered and 565 antlerless sika deer.

Maryland's Elk Neck State Forest Rifle Range Closed for Repairs

The rifle and shotgun ranges at Elk Neck State Forest will be closed beginning November 30, 2010 for renovations and repairs. This closure should last several weeks. During the closure, the pistol range will remain open for use during normal hours of operation.

Users are reminded that the pistol range is restricted to the use of revolvers and pistols only. No long rifles of any sort are permitted at facility.

Maryland's Firearm Deer Season Set to Open Nov. 27th

Maryland's two-week deer firearm season opens Saturday, November 27, 2010. Hunters usually take nearly half of the annual deer harvest during this popular Maryland tradition.

"The two-week firearm season is the main event for most deer hunters," said Brian Eyler, Deer Project Leader for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR). "It's a great opportunity for family and friends to spend time together in the woods and the substantial harvest helps manage our deer population."

Maryland Fall Turkey and Early Deer Season Results Available

Turkey hunters harvested 171 turkeys in Western Maryland during the one week fall turkey season, according to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources' (DNR) preliminary results. That's up 14 percent from the 2009 total of 150 birds for Washington, Allegany and Garrett Counties. Deer hunters reported 25,324 deer for the period September 15 to October 31, up 4 percent over last year's take of 24,384 for the same period.

Maryland's 16th Annual Junior Deer Hunt Day Nov. 13th

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) invites young hunters across the State to participate in the 16th Annual Maryland Junior Deer Hunt Day on Saturday, November 13.

"The Junior Deer Hunt is a day dedicated to encouraging interest in the tradition of hunting while demonstrating safe and ethical outdoor skills," said Paul Peditto, Director of DNR’s Wildlife and Heritage Service. "The hunt also provides an opportunity to engage the next generation of outdoor enthusiasts in an appreciation of our natural resources."

Maryland's Fall Turkey Season Opens Oct. 30th

Maryland's fall turkey season will open Saturday, October 30 and will continue through November 6, 2010. Fall turkey hunting is only permitted in Garrett, Allegany and Washington counties with a bag limit of one turkey per hunter.

The western region's turkey population has been strong for the past few years and hunters should expect similar turkey numbers this fall. Surveys conducted this past summer by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) documented high numbers of turkeys in the region, despite slightly below-average reproductive success.

Maryland DNR Announces Deer Hunt Dates at Wye Island NRMA

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Maryland Park Service announced the 2010-2011 dates for archery and firearms deer hunts at Wye Island Natural Resources Management Area (NRMA).

This year's dates for archery hunts are now through October 20, October 25 through November 26, December 13-17, January 3-6, 2011, and January 10-31, 2011, Monday through Saturday only. No archery hunting will be allowed during the muzzleloader and firearms season.

Maryland Black Bear Drawing Complete - Results Online

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) held the drawing for the 2010 Maryland Black Bear Hunting Permits. A record 3,850 applications were received online and by telephone over the 31-day period, surpassing the 3,608 applications DNR received in 2009.
