12-Year-Old Silver Spring Boy Wins Grand Prize at Maryland Fishing Challenge Finale

Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Secretary John Griffin and fishing legend Lefty Kreh presented approximately $70,000 in cash, prizes and merchandise to lucky anglers this morning at the 2011 Maryland Fishing Challenge. Nearly 2,000 people, including sponsors, anglers and their guests, attended the 7th annual contest’s closing ceremony at Sandy Point State Park.

Maryland DNR Implements New Regulations to Prevent Spread of CWD

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announces new regulations to help prevent the spread of chronic wasting disease (CWD). These regulations, effective immediately, apply only to a small portion of Allegany County, and ban the use of bait and limit the movement of deer carcasses.

Possible Diamond Jim Winner Caught in Maryland!
Glenn Gross of Baltimore, Md. has caught what may be the $25,000 Diamond Jim winner and second certified tagged rockfish of the 2011 Maryland Fishing Challenge. Gross was fishing with a group of friends and coworkers aboard the charter boat "Never Enuff," skippered by Captain Shawn Pruitt, in the Chesapeake Bay off of Calvert County, when the 22-inch striped bass came to the side of the boat on the afternoon of July 31.
Maryland Celebrates National Hunting and Fishing Day on September 24

In conjunction with more than 30 fishing and hunting clubs, conservation organizations and local businesses, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will host Maryland’s 5th Annual National Hunting and Fishing Day Celebration and Expo from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 24 at Schrader’s Bridgetown Manor in Henderson on Maryland’s eastern shore. Anglers, hunters and those interested in learning more about the great outdoors are invited to this free, public event.

Maryland DNR Scheduling Shooter Qualifications for Managed Deer Hunts

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announces the schedule for the 2011-2012 shooter qualifications, which includes over 50 sessions at 15 locations throughout the State. These events allow hunters to take the shooting proficiency test that is required before participating in many of the managed deer hunts held in Maryland.

Maryland DNR Blind Site Licensing Begins Aug. 2nd

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Wildlife & Heritage Service announced the waterfowl blind site licensing schedule for Maryland waters. The initial phase of licensing will take place August 2 at designated locations in each county (see list below). On August 3 and thereafter, licensing will take place only at the DNR Service Centers in Salisbury, Centreville, Bel Air, and Prince Frederick and the Tawes Building in Annapolis (see below for the counties that will be available at these offices).

Maryland Black Bear Applications Accepted July 1

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will begin accepting applications for this year's lottery for black bear hunting permits starting July 1. Successful applicants will receive a permit valid for the black bear hunting season scheduled to take place October 24-29.
