Youth Turkey Hunt Scheduled for April 12
Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Secretary C. Ronald Franks reminded hunters today that the statewide Youth Turkey Hunt will be held on Saturday April 12. This is the third consecutive year that DNR is offering the special turkey hunt. The one-day hunt allows young people, age 16 or younger, to hunt wild turkeys when accompanied by an unarmed adult age 21 years or older.
Jacklighter Gets Jail
A Pittsville, Md., man will spend 30 days in jail after pleading guilty to charges of "jacklighting" in District Court of Maryland - Wicomico County on Monday. Robert I. Hill, 45, also plead guilty to carrying a loaded weapon in a vehicle.
2002 Firearm Season Deer Harvest Up 9%
A preliminary count of the two-week deer hunting firearm season indicates that Maryland firearm hunters took 41,469 deer, an increase more than 9 percent from last year. After taking an estimated 15,473 deer on opening day, firearm deer hunters bagged an estimated 25,996 deer during the remaining two-week season. Since the expansion of the firearm season from one week to two in 1992, the department has increased deer hunting opportunities by 50 percent.
Preliminary Opening Day Firearm Deer Harvest Numbers Up Seven Percent Over Last Year
Preliminary reports on the opening day of the firearms deer season, collected from check stations by Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Wildlife and Heritage Service staff, show that hunters took 15,473 deer, up seven percent from last year's preliminary opening day numbers.
Black Bear Task Force Releases Draft
The 12-member Maryland Black Bear Task Force (BBTF) today issued its draft report which is available on the Department of Natural Resources Web site, by email, and at Wildlife and Heritage Service offices. Among the task force draft recommendations are the use of "Regulated Hunting" as a tool to achieve a targeted population objective.

Deer Archery Season Opens September 14
This year's Maryland deer archery season opens Sept. 14, and runs through Jan. 31. While archery deer hunting and the harvest data obtained from hunters is critical to the management of this species, archery hunting is also a traditional outdoor recreational experience. More than 37,000 bowhunters spend approximately 500,000 hunting days afield each year pursuing abundant deer populations across Maryland's varied landscape.
