Vienna, Maryland Man Arrested for Unlawful Possession of Firearms

Today at approximately 7:15 a.m., the Maryland Natural Resources Police (NRP) arrested Scott G. Rogers Sr., 77 from Vienna, Md., for possessing firearms after being convicted of a violent crime.

Maryland Deer Test Negative for Chronic Wasting Disease

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reports that all of the 305 samples taken from white-tailed deer this season tested negative for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD). Samples taken this year bring the overall total of deer tested in Maryland to 7,483. The first and only deer in Maryland to test positive for CWD was harvested in 2010 in Allegany County.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will hold two public meetings to gather public input on the proposed hunting and trapping regulations for resident game species and select migratory game birds for 2012-2013 and 2013-2014. DNR’s Wildlife and Heritage Service reevaluates these hunting and trapping regulations every two years.

Maryland DNR Announces Deer Season Harvest for 2011-12

Maryland deer hunters harvested 98,029 deer during the 2011-2012 bow, muzzleloader and firearm seasons combined. This figure is similar to last year’s harvest of 98,663 deer. The antlered harvest increased 3 percent to 34,416 this year, while the antlerless harvest declined 3 percent to 63,613 deer. The harvest totals include 2,657 sika deer; a 4 percent decrease from last year’s total for this species.

Maryland to Assess Public Opinion on Potential Reintroduction of Elk in Western Maryland

The Maryland Legislative Sportsmen’s Foundation (MLSF), the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF) today announced plans to conduct an extensive public opinion survey to determine the viability of elk reintroduction to Western Maryland. Elk once roamed Maryland, but have been absent since the 1700s.

New York DEC Amends Chronic Wasting Disease Regulations in Response to Maryland Discovery

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has revised its Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) regulations to prohibit the importation of certain parts of white-tailed deer taken in the state of Maryland effective immediately, DEC Commissioner Joe Martens announced today.
