Any Deer Permit Drawing Complete
Hunters were selected Wednesday in the annual Any Deer permit drawing. 72,600 Permits were issued, including 947 bonus permits and 10,164 landowner permits along with the regular 71,653 Any Deer permits.
Moose Season Begins Today
Moose hunters get their chance at a trophy starting on Monday, September 22. The first week of the two-week moose hunting season begins Monday in northern and eastern parts of the state. The second week of the split season begins on Monday, October 13 in the northern two-thirds of the state.

DNA Tests Confirm Lynx/Bobcat Hybridization
Research scientists have verified through DNA analysis evidence of hybridization between wild Canada lynx and bobcats in Maine. Samples collected by Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife biologists from two cats were tested at the U.S. Forest Service's genetics laboratory in Missoula, Montana, confirming that the animals, one male and one female, were lynx-bobcat hybrids.
IFW to Review Moose Options
On August 15, 2003, Commissioner Roland D Martin was presented with a petition containing over 2,700 names. "Although the petition does not request anything specific, it is clear to me that folks in northern Maine would like the Department to reduce the moose population by increasing the number of permits," Martin said. " We cannot ignore this level of concern," he added.
Any-Deer Permit Application Deadline Nears
Hunters wishing to hunt deer of either sex this season are reminded that their any-deer permit applications must be postmarked no later than July 15, or received at the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife headquarters by 5:00 p.m. on July 15. Hunters also have until 11:59 p.m. on August 1 to apply online at www.mefishwildlife.com. To apply, you must have a current hunting license and you can apply just once.
Council Approves Any Deer Permit Numbers
On the heels of the best deer season since 1968, deer hunters will get plenty of opportunity again this fall, as the Commissioner's Advisory Council approved issuing 72,600 Any Deer permits this year, the second most ever.
June 10 is Moose Lottery Day
On Tuesday, June 10, 2003, 2,585 names will be randomly selected by a computer for the opportunity to hunt Moose in Maine this fall. The annual moose lottery drawing will be held at the Old Town Elks Lodge, located on 290 North Fourth Street extension in Old Town. The drawing will begin promptly at 6:00.
IFW and Irving Woodlands Sign Deer Wintering Agreement
The Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife and Irving Woodlands have entered into an agreement that directly benefits the state's deer population, and other wildlife species.
