Hunters Bag Best Deer Season Since 1968
Deer hunters in Maine had a remarkable season this past year, with hunters killing 38,153 deer, the highest total since 1968, marking it as the tenth best season ever.

Moose Auction Nets $51,542 For Scholarships
Over $50,000 was raised for youth conservation education scholarships in Maine through the 2003 Maine Moose Permit Auction. Five hunters bid a total of $51,542 in an auction for the privilege to hunt moose in Maine during the 2003 season. Four of the winning bids were unveiled Friday, and the fifth was auctioned by the North American Moose Foundation earlier in March.
Moose Permit Application Deadline Approaching
Those who want to hunt moose in the state of Maine are reminded that the deadline for Moose Permit Applications is Tuesday, April 1. This year 2,585 permits are available in 19 wildlife management districts statewide.
Aerial Moose Population Survey Underway
The Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife is currently in the midst of conducting an Aerial Moose Census east of Moosehead lake. AirScan, Inc. is conducting the survey. AirScan performed the first census for the department, back in April of 2001, and conducts wildlife census work for other agencies throughout the country.
Council Overwhelmingly Accepts Moose Season Changes
Those who hunt moose in Maine next year are going to see some changes. Today, the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife's 10 member advisory council voted 9-1 to accept the department's proposal that decreases the number of permits issued in some parts of the state, increases the amount of huntable area, and changes what type of permits are issued to hunters.
Deer Kill Expected To Be In 34,000-36,000 Range
Preliminary data from this year's deer season indicates a very successful year for deer hunters statewide. Season timing, weather conditions and last year's mild winter all contributed to a deer kill that is expected to be in the 34,000 to 36,000 range. The preseason projection for the deer kill was approximately 35,750 deer.
Restructuring Moose Permit System Proposed
Under a new proposal, moose hunters could see some changes in not only the number of permits issued, but also in just what type of permit they are issued. The changes would allow the department to more closely regulate the moose harvest in coming years.
Moose Hunters Enjoy 80% Success Rate
All the Moose registration books are in and have been counted, and this year, 80 percent of all moose hunters who were issued a permit were successful. This year, 2,964 moose hunters were issued permits, and 2,375 were successful.
Regular Firearms Season Opens November 2nd
As deer hunters ready for opening day, hunters will find deer populations in southern and central areas of the state have rebounded from the severe winter of 2001, but in northern and eastern Maine, the effects are still being felt. The regular firearm season for deer opens on Saturday, November 2 for residents, and Monday, November 4 for nonresidents.
