The 2011 Maine Moose Permit Lottery Will take place Saturday, June 18, at Cabela's in Scarborough. The public and media are encouraged to attend.

Cabela's is planning a full day of activities starting at 10 a.m., including moose hunting tips, a pre-season scouting report and a barbeque contest. For kids, the Maine Bowhunters Association will have a youth archery range, Bryant Pond 4-H Camp will demonstrate primitive fire making and give tips on how to make moose calls, and ATV Maine will offer youth ATV riding and safety tips.

Opening ceremonies will begin at 3:45 p.m., with the presentation of the colors by the Maine Warden Service Color Guard. The drawing of names will commence at 4 p.m.

The names will be posted on MDIF&W's web site at approximately 8 p.m.

"This year will be one for the record books as more permits will be awarded than in years past," said Commissioner Woodcock. "All of the names – more than 3,700 of them – will be read at this year's lottery, and regardless of whether a hunter's name is called, the event itself is sure to please those in attendance. Of course, having your name read makes the day even better!"

Since 1999, the Maine Moose Permit Lottery Drawing has been held at different locations throughout the state, including Millinocket, Boothbay Harbor, Old Town, Bucksport, Scarborough, Presque Isle, Rumford, Phippsburg, Kittery, Fort Kent and Freeport.

Oh man I can hardly wait!

Oh man I can hardly wait!  After I read t his I got all jittery. Did they really say ‘This year will be one for the record books as more permits will be awarded than in years past’  Woo hoo!  Maybe the preference points will pay off.  That would be SWEET!  Scarborough, Maine is about six hour drive from my home so I don’t think that I will actually be attending the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife’s lottery drawing live  – but you bet I’ll be checking the results within twenty four hours after they are drawn.  Yeah – I know the odds are long.  Really long – like under a  five percent chance for drawing a tag even with several years of preference points built up, but I can’t help but hope.  Hey – you never know when you might just get lucky!  Oh what a year that would be if I drew in Maine, hunted mule deer in the state of Washington and took my son out to bag his first deer at home in New York!  2007 was a great year fro me.  I hunted mule deer in Washington state with the same friends that I will be hunting with this fall (including our own site member Arrow-flipper), then I flew home to moose hunt with fellow BGH site member Rem2Arms and was with him when he took his Vermont moose – what a time we had dragging her out of the woods gutted but WHOLE with no motor vehicle access!  (I think there were 9 of us on the ropes).  Then I took a buck white tail deer at home.  It was a fantastic year of hunting for me.  I don’t know if I will ever be able to match it but 2011 sure has the potential to be another great year of hunting.  So I’ll keep my fingers crossed for a state of Maine moose tag and I’ll be checking the results Saturday night or Sunday this weekend.  Good luck to everybody who is in for this one.  Thanks for sharing the reminder announcement.  Mike
