Louisiana Considers Turkey Season Date and Regulation Changes

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) proposed the season dates and regulations revisions for the 2012 turkey hunting season at the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission's July 7 meeting.

Louisiana Adjusts Deer Seasons in Atchafalaya Flood Basin

At the July 7 meeting, the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission (LWFC) approved changes to the 2011-2012 deer hunting season dates for select areas within the Atchafalaya Basin due to spring flood impacts.

The emergency action, which revises dates previously adopted by the commission, was recommended by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) based on estimates of deer mortality caused by recent historic flooding along the Mississippi River and subsequent opening of the Morganza Spillway on May 14.

Louisiana Still Seeking Info on Bald Eagle Killings

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) Enforcement Division agents and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Office of Law Enforcement special agents continue to seek information regarding the killing of two federally protected bald eagles.

Agents believe both eagles were killed on or about Dec. 7, 2010 on the East Bank area of Plaquemines Parish.

Louisiana Game Commission Briefed on Changes to 2011-12 Turkey Season

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries has summarized the changes in the turkey hunting regulations that it expects to make when the formal season proposal is made at the July meeting of the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission. The department expects to propose two turkey hunting zones with different opening dates.

It is expected that the season would open in the south on the Saturday closest to March 22, and in the north on the Saturday closest to March 29. Youth turkey hunt weekends would be set a week prior to the season openings.

Louisiana Alligator Lottery Hunts Available

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF), in an effort to increase alligator harvest opportunities, will conduct alligator lottery hunts on four Coastal & Nongame Resources (CNR) Division Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs), 13 Wildlife Division WMAs and 22 public lakes during the 2011 alligator harvest season.

The CNR Division WMAs include: Atchafalaya Delta WMA, St. Mary Parish; Pass A Loutre WMA, Plaquemines Parish; Pointe Aux Chenes WMA, Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes; and Salvador/Timken WMAs, St. Charles Parish.

Louisiana Approves Amendments for 2011-2013 Hunt Seasons

The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission, during their May 5 monthly meeting, approved two notices of intent (NOI) that included several amendments for the 2011-13 hunting seasons and the 2011-12 Wildlife Management Area (WMA) hunting season.

Louisiana DWF Approves Revisions to Deer Management Assistance Program

The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission (LWFC), during their May 5 monthly meeting, approved a notice of intent (NOI) with amendments that provides for changes in the Deer Management Assistance Program (DMAP) administered by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF).

The amendments to the changes proposed in the NOI presented in February are all within the Level 1 DMAP participant category and include:

Louisiana Youth - Hunter of the Year Award Opportunity

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) and the Louisiana Outdoor Writers Association (LOWA) are encouraging hunters 15 years of age or younger to enter the 2010 Youth Hunter of the Year competition.

The contest requires youth hunters to submit a story about their hunting experience along with photographs of the hunt. LDWF and LOWA will then select a male and female youth hunter of the year based upon the stories and photos that are received.

Louisiana Considers Alligator Regulation Changes

The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission (LWFC) adopted a notice of intent April 7 for regulation changes in the Alligator Management Program. The changes, proposed by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF), provide options relative to alligator skin processing and would allow non-residents owning wetland habitat in Louisiana to obtain harvest tags.

Louisiana Turkey Season Approaching - Tags and Harvest Reporting Required

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) is reminding hunters that tags must be in possession by all turkey hunters regardless of age during the upcoming 2011 turkey season that opens March 19. Turkey hunters are also reminded that harvested turkeys must be tagged prior to being moved from the site of harvest.
