Louisiana BOW Event March 20-22
The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) is sponsoring a Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) workshop from March 20 through 22 at the Camp Grant Walker 4-H Center located just north of Alexandria in Pollock.
Women 18 and older throughout Louisiana and neighboring states can enroll in four classes from a selection of more than 30 topics during the BOW workshop. These subjects include bucks and does, shotgun, rifle, fly-fishing, canoeing, camping, archery, horseback riding, boating, birding, map and compass skills, outdoor photography, camp cooking and more. Expert instructors donate their time and skills in classes taught in and around the nearby streams, lakes, wooded ridges, and forest trails of beautiful Louisiana.
Women can obtain an application form for the educational outdoor workshop from the LDWF Web site at www.wlf.louisiana.gov/education/becominganoutdoorswoman. All applications must include a $170 check or money order made payable to the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Foundation. The fee includes instruction for four selected classes, program materials, use of demonstration equipment, lodging, meals and evening entertainment. Registration is limited to the first 125 women that apply.
Natural resource scientist Christine Thomas of the University of Wisconsin founded the Becoming an Outdoors-Woman program. She completed a survey in 1991 entitled "Barriers to Women Participating in Hunting and Fishing." The survey documented that the most obvious problem was lack of instruction and encouragement.
Application forms may also be obtained by contacting Bill Breed in Monroe at 318-343-1241 or Dana Norsworthy in Monroe at 318-345-3912. The forms must be completed and mailed to the address on the form. Applications will be accepted until the workshop is full and all applications received after the workshop is full will be placed on a waiting list in case of cancellations.
Join the fun and be one of those 125 women in the woods. Register for the Becoming an Outdoors-Woman workshop and become a skilled outdoorswoman.
