Boars beware - Leupold® has introduced the VX-R™ HOG illuminated riflescope featuring a specially designed FireDot™ Pig Plex reticle for fast target acquisition and precise shot placement.

The new VX-R HOG is a 1.25-4x20mm riflescope, well suited for the terrain and conditions typical of wild boar country. Its FireDot Pig Plex reticle is not only illuminated, but calibrated to frame up a mature hog and provide just the right amount of lead on running boars.

"As a sponsor of Brian 'Pigman' Quaca, we wanted to design a riflescope that matches his passion and commitment to hog hunting," commented Andy York, vice president of sales, marketing and technology for Leupold & Stevens, Inc. "Brian and his fellow boar hunters around the country are now rigged for pig with the VX-R HOG, which offers true daylight-capable illumination, a bright and crisp aiming point, low-profile mount and a forgiving eyebox that allows a quick and comfortable cheek weld."

The HOG and other VX-R illuminated riflescopes combine proprietary powered fiber optic technology and the exclusive FireDot reticle to provide hunters with exceptional target definition and acquisition, in the bright light of day as well as the low light of dawn or dusk.

VX-R scopes feature a single push button illumination system with Leupold's own Motion Sensor Technology (MST™). A touch of the button illuminates the dot within the reticle. By repeatedly pressing the button, the user can select between eight different intensity settings including a high-low indicator, which flashes when either the maximum or minimum intensity is reached. After five minutes of inactivity, the illumination system automatically switches to stand-by mode, but reactivates at the same intensity setting whenever the rifle is moved. This helps extend battery life and, by reducing movement, allows the hunter to maintain greater stealth in the field.

In addition, the VX-R has a fiber optic light pipe with a precisely cut, meticulously polished tip designed to deliver an illuminated dot that can be easily seen in bright light, yet is not overpowering in low-light conditions. Once activated, the dot illuminates with bright, sharp definition, while the rest of the reticle remains non-illuminated. This combination leads the eye naturally to the center aiming point and makes target acquisition quick, precise and simple.

Leupold is my riflescope maker of choice.

Leupold is my riflescope maker of choice.  I love my one and only Leupold that I have to date.  It is not illuminated, but I sure would like one that is. My one complaint with my Vari X III is that it is 3x magnification at minimum.  When I had a buck jump up at 30 yards this past season, I had a scope full of hair at the 3x setting.  I would like a Leupold that I could reduce to 2x or lower so this new 1.25-4x20mm riflescope sounds just about perfect to me.  I don’t see a lot of hog hunting in my future but since male bear are called boars and big deer are called ‘hogs’ and since I someday hope to collect a big African warthog the idea of being “rigged for pig with the VX-R HOG” sounds just fine to me!

In fact, all the added features like eight different intensity settings - including a high-low indicator, which flashes  - are probably more choices than I need or would even use if I owned the scope.  But I love that the scope is backed by Leupold's Full Lifetime Guarantee. And it’s a bonus to buy from an American company to boot!  I think I am going to have to keep an eye out for this scope and see if I can make it fit my budget.  The one thing missing from the original post was some idea of suggested retail cost.  I guess I’ll just hope for the best, watch for discounts and sales and keep watch on the used gear classifieds in case one shows up.

Thanks for sharing the information,

I have been thinking of

I have been thinking of building a dedicated hog rifle and as soon as I figure out what it's gonna be I'm pretty sure I'm going to put one of these scopes on top of it. I can see a lot of other applications for it's use in many hunting situations. I like the motion activated feature and will have to watch for more reviews to see how well it holds up.

All in all this sounds like a winning combination for whatever you might put it on top of.
