Illinois Hunters Head Into the Field
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) expects nearly 200,000 hunters in the field this weekend as the 2006 firearm deer season opens across Illinois. Over 335,000 permits have been issued for this year's season, which is a slight increase over last year.
Illinois Hunters Asked to Support Sportsmen Against Hunger
The opening of the new deer hunting season on Sunday means thousands of families in Illinois will benefit from the generosity of deer hunters who donate to the Illinois Sportsmen Against Hunger program. Begun in 1989, Illinois Sportsmen Against Hunger (ISAH) allows hunters to donate deer they harvest to provide venison for distribution to food banks, food pantries and charitable organizations helping feed the hungry throughout the state.

Unused Gun Deer Permits to be Rolled Over
Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich today signed a new law giving hunters more flexibility in using their seasonal deer hunting permits. Senate Bill 2810, introduced by Sen. Gary Forby (D-Benton), allows unused gun deer permits left over from the firearm or muzzleloader-only deer hunting seasons to be rolled over and used during the Late-Winter Firearm Deer Season at no additional charge.
Archery Deer Hunting Program Planned for This Fall
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources has scheduled an archery deer hunting program on designated portions of the Sahara Woods State Fish and Wildlife Area in southern Illinois for this fall.
Spring Turkey Season a Record Setter
Hunters harvested a total of 15,628 wild turkeys during the regular seasons conducted April 3-May 4 in the south zone and April 10-May 11 in the north zone. An additional 512 turkeys were harvested during the Youth Turkey Season conducted Mar. 25-26 in the south zone and April 1-2 in the north zone.
