Idaho Deer Killed to Control Exotic Louse Infestation

With help from USDA Wildlife Service, Idaho Fish and Game killed 60 mule deer in Riggins to help stop the spread of an infestation of exotic lice.

In March 2009, a male mule deer about nine months old suffering from hair loss was reported in Riggins. Officials who responded found the deer dead and sent it to Idaho's Wildlife Health Lab for a necropsy. The animal was emaciated, with evidence of pneumonia and thousands of lice on the body - an exotic louse not previously reported in Idaho.

Idaho Fish and Game's Annual Fur Auction Set for March 31

Idaho Fish and Game will auction furs, hides, antlers, traps and miscellaneous hunting and fishing equipment on Saturday, March 31, at the Southwest Region office, 3101 S. Powerline Road, Nampa.

Anyone interested may view the items beginning at 8 a.m., with the auction beginning promptly at 10 a.m.

Wolf Control Is Part of Idaho F&G's Predation Management Plan

In cooperation with Idaho Fish and Game, the USDA Wildlife Services has completed a wolf control action in northern Idaho's Lolo zone.

Over three days in early February, Wildlife Services agents killed 14 wolves from a helicopter. The action is part of, and consistent with Idaho's predation management plan for the Lolo elk zone.

In the Lolo zone, hunters have taken 11 wolves, trappers have taken 11, control efforts earlier in spring 2011 took six, and the most recent control effort took 14 for a total of 42 wolves.

Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Partners Recognize Standout Conservation Pros

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and U.S. Forest Service employees in four states—Idaho, Montana, New Mexico and Wyoming—have earned recognition for standout work to enhance and conserve habitat for elk and other wildlife.

Each has received a special award from the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and their respective agency for conservation efforts in partnership with RMEF.

The new upland game, turkey and furbearer seasons and rules books are back from the printer and will available later this week.

The 2012-2013 & 2013-2014 Upland Game, Furbearer and Turkey seasons and rules brochure includes some changes that affect some spring turkey controlled hunts.

Idaho Fish & Game Sets Big Game Scoring Day in Idaho Falls

A big game scoring day has been scheduled for Wednesday, February 29, at the Idaho Fish and Game regional office in Idaho Falls.

Measuring will be done according to Boone & Crockett standards.

Anyone interested must bring their antlers, horns or skulls to the Fish and Game's Idaho Falls office on Tuesday, February 28, no later than 5 p.m. in order for them to be scored. The office is at 4279 Commerce Circle, Idaho Falls.

Parvovirus Found in Wolf Killed in Hailey, Idaho

On January 22, a Hailey-area homeowner killed a wolf that had been observed near his house for at least two days and was acting sick or injured.

Immediately after killing the wolf, the homeowner notified Idaho Fish and Game. Two Fish and Game officers arrived and retrieved the dead wolf, a juvenile female. The animal was emaciated and had green fluid diarrhea.

Time Running Out to Apply for Idaho Bear Tags

Hunters have a few days left to apply for this spring's controlled bear hunts.

The application period ends Wednesday, February 15.

Poachers Get Stiff Sentences in Custer County, Idaho

Four men were jailed and fined thousands of dollars Monday, February 6, in Custer County after pleading guilty to charges stemming from an investigation into illegal hunting activity in the Yankee Fork drainage.

A fifth man was sentenced in January. Two others were warned.

Apply for Spring Turkey Hunts Starting Feb. 1st in Idaho

The application period for spring turkey controlled hunts opens February 1 and runs to March 1.

The application period for spring black bear ends February 15.

Spring turkey and spring black bear seasons start April 15 - some controlled hunts open later. Leftover tags for spring turkey and bear controlled hunts go on sale April 1.
