Idaho DFG to Hold Open House to Discuss Proposed Non-Biological Changes and Sandhill Crane Permits

On Tuesday, June 26, 2012 the Upper Snake Region of the Idaho Department of Fish & Game will be holding an open house all day long to discuss proposed non-biological rule changes for the upcoming year, as well as proposed decreases in sandhill crane permit numbers.

Idaho Application Period for Controlled Hunts Opens May 1

The application period for this fall's deer, elk, pronghorn, fall black bear and fall turkey controlled hunts starts Tuesday, May 1, and runs through June 5.

Hunters may apply for controlled hunts at any hunting and fishing license vendor, Fish and Game office; with a credit card by calling 1-800-55HUNT5; or online at http://fishandgame.idaho.gov. An additional fee is charged for telephone and Internet applications. Hunters must have a 2012 Idaho hunting license to apply.

Idaho Bear Managers Put Down Conditioned Grizzly Bear

Trappers from U.S. Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services with help from Idaho Fish and Game, on April 22, euthanized a three-year old female grizzly that had come out of hibernation and started getting into garbage cans in a subdivision near the Idaho-Wyoming border outside Driggs.

Idaho Mountain Lions Captured from Gibson Jack Area

On the night of Tuesday, April 10, the Idaho Department of Fish and Game captured and removed two mountain lions, a female and a male, from the Gibson Jack area of Pocatello.

The mountain lions, both sub-adults, were thin and dehydrated, the female weighing only 15 pounds and the male 20 pounds at time of capture. Both were taken to a secure, safe holding facility where they are being monitored and awaiting placement at a zoo.

Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation: $1.2 Million for Habitat Work in Six States

So far in 2012, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation has allocated $1,258,888 for habitat stewardship and protection projects in six key elk states. The figure represents a significant increase from 2011.
 
More than 139,000 acres should be conserved for elk and other wildlife in 2012 as a result of these initial allocations.
 
Affected states include Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington and Wyoming.
 
RMEF will announce funding allocations for additional states later this year.

Become a Hunter-bowhunter Education Instructor

The Southeast Region of the Idaho Department of Fish and Game has scheduled three new instructor workshops for individuals who would like to become hunter education or bowhunter education instructors.

The new instructor orientations will run from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on the following dates at these locations.

Idaho Wolf Seasons Closed in Most Zones

Wolf trapping seasons closed March 31 in all wolf management zones, and hunting seasons have closed in all but the Lolo and Selway zones where hunting seasons remain open through June 30.

As of April 2, hunters had killed 252 wolves, and trappers 123, for a total of 375 wolves. Fish and Game sold about 43,300 wolf tags for the 2011-2012 season.

Idaho F&G Commission Sets 2012 Big Game Seasons

The Idaho Fish and Game Commission during a meeting Thursday, March 22, set big game seasons for 2012.

The commissioners adopted Fish and Game staff recommendations for this fall's deer, elk, pronghorn, black bear, gray wolf and mountain lion hunts, and added a few changes of their own.

Time to Enter Idaho's Super Hunt Drawing

The deadline to enter the first Super Hunt drawing is May 31.

With every entry in Fish and Game's Super Hunt drawings, hunters get a chance at winning the hunt of a lifetime, and their entry fee helps support hunter and angler access to and across private lands.

The first drawing in June will pick 26 lucky hunters, each of whom will win one of 25 tags - eight elk, eight deer, and eight pronghorn hunts as well as one moose hunt; and one "Super Hunt Combo" entry also will be drawn that will entitle the winner to hunt for one each elk, deer, pronghorn and moose.

Q. I drew on a controlled hunt for the 2012 spring turkey hunt in Unit 54, but it doesn't open till after May 1. I also want to hunt turkey in Unit 8A before the controlled hunt opens. Is it possible to get my controlled hunt tag, a general tag, and also an extra tag for the spring hunt?
