The investigation into the hunting injury on Dec. 16 near Fairfield, has been ruled as an unintentional, self-inflicted shooting, according to Iowa Department of Natural Resources conservation officer Paul Kay.

Kay said Christopher Cook, 18, was walking through a grassy, snow covered draw when he tripped over a partially snow covered log and discharged his shotgun. The slug struck Cook in the side, missing his vital organs.

Cook was discharged from the University of Iowa Hospitals, in Iowa City, Wednesday afternoon.
