H. “Bumper” Bauer Wins Five Outdoor Writer Awards
At the Spring Conference on March 30, 2008 held in Easton Maryland the Mason-Dixon Outdoor Writers Association presented Outdoor writer Harvey J. Bauer of Brookville Pennsylvania with three awards for "Excellence in Craft".
He won the "Best Magazine or Regional Newspaper Column sponsored by GATCO with a piece about the importance of getting family involved in the outdoors entitled "Who Said Women Have No Place in The Outdoors?" published in the Ohio Valley Outdoors Magazine
He also won the "Best Magazine Feature Article Award" for a poignant article describing an aged turkey hunter and his most personal thoughts while hunting spring gobblers titled "The Old Man" published in the Pennsylvania Game News Magazine.
His third award was the coveted "Leroy Whitman Memorial Award" for "Excellence in Craft" also for "The Old Man" published in the Pennsylvania Game News Magazine.
The Mason-Dixon Outdoor Writers Association (M-DOWA) is a not-for-profit organization, founded in 1957, to foster professionalism and improved knowledge of craft among outdoor communicators in all fields of media.

On May 1, 2008 Bauer was presented with two "Excellence in Craft" awards from the Pennsylvania Outdoor Writers Association P.O.W.A. At their Spring Conference in Allentown Pa.
He won the POWA/ Pure Fishing Award "Best Magazine or Regional Newspaper Feature" for a touching article about the likeness of an elderly hunter and his aged bird dog titled "Of Old Dogs and Men" published in Bird Dog and Retriever News Magazine and Ohio Valley Outdoors Magazine.
He also won the "Wild Turkey Award" Sponsored by the Pennsylvania Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation for an article describing a reunion of three long time friends titled "Thrills and Timber Ghosts" published in Pennsylvania Game News Magazine.
The POWA is the largest state outdoor writer's organization in the nation and correspondingly with the M-DOWA Craft Awards program they annually honor writing, artwork, photography and media presentation in several categories. With both organizations EACH award category is judged by a separate panel of judges independent of either organization.
"Bumper" a nickname name he was tagged with by friends he worked with in the Greensburg Pa. Police Department for twenty seven years began his writing in earnest after retiring in 1994. Since then he has moved to Brookville Pa. writes for a variety of regional and national magazines and major hunting and fishing web sites and has appeared on outdoor radio and television shows.
Bauer is a Pro-Staffer for Pennsylvania Back Country Television and McLaughlin Game Call Company of Reynoldsville, Pa.
