Guide and Outfitter Meetings to be Held
The State Game and Fish Department will host five regional meetings in early September designed to update guides and outfitters on new rules and regulations passed during the 2003 legislative session.
This past winter, lawmakers passed and Governor Hoeven signed House Bill 1050, which establishes a new licensing and fee structure for guides and outfitters. Guides and outfitters can be either a resident or nonresident.
Qualifications for becoming a guide now include a background check for criminal and game and fish violations; certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and standard first aid; passing a written exam that shows the applicant knows applicable state and federal laws relating to hunting wild game; and employment by or contract with a licensed hunting outfitter.
Hunting outfitter eligibility requirements include the guide qualifications, as well as an individual must have held a hunting guide license for two years; and must have proof of liability insurance.
Guides who received their 2003 license prior to Aug. 1 can guide this fall, but will need to take the test prior to 2004. Guides only have to pass the test once, and those interested can take the test in September at one of the meetings. After those meetings, the next test will be offered in December.
Prospective new guides or outfitters must complete the testing requirement prior to obtaining a license. Meetings are scheduled for the following times and locations, and pre-registration is encouraged by calling the phone number listed for each respective meeting (all meetings will start at 7 p.m. local time):
