Final Moose, Sheep, Goat And Mountain Lion Quotas Set
The Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Commission adopted final moose, sheep, goat and mountain lion quotas that are mainly unchanged from last year, with some isolated reductions in quotas.
Antlered bull moose quotas in FWP Region 3, the Bozeman area, went from 5 to 1 in hunting district 310 and in hunting district 313 the antlered bull moose quota went from 15 to 5.
Final bighorn sheep quotas were reduced by 1 to 3 sheep in some hunting districts in FWP Region 4, the Great Falls area. However, also in FWP Region 4, in hunting district 424, either sex sheep permits increased from 2 to 5.
Final mountain goat quotas remained mainly unchanged except for hunting district 312 in FWP Region 3 where the number of either sex mountain goat permits went from 12 to 8. Due to a boundary change in FWP Region 4 in hunting district 451 the either sex mountain goat quota increased from 2 to 4.
Final mountain lion quotas in FWP Region 1, the Kalispell area, were adjusted up or down, depending on the hunting district, to more closely relate to the biological potential for lions in these hunting districts.
Mountain lion quotas were also adjusted down in the range of 2 to 4 lions in some hunting districts in FWP Region 2, in the Missoula area, because the goal of reducing the density of mountain lions in these hunting districts was achieved.
The language in the mountain lion regulations was clarified to state that a hunting harvest permit is required for a non-outfitted, non-resident to hunt with dogs and harvest a mountain lion in FWP Region 1 (100 series districts) in northwest Montana except for hunting districts 150 and 151. Also, special permits once available in hunting districts 100 and 101 are now only available in hunting district 101 and are valid from Dec. 3, 2002 to April 14, 2003.
Hunters are reminded that when they apply for any special permit they must include their date of birth combined with the Automated Licensing System number they received when purchasing their Conservation License.
