MassWildlife Deer Project Leader Bill Woytek reports a record total of 12,264 white-tailed deer taken by licensed hunters during the combined 2002 seasons. An additional 153 deer were taken during the Quabbin Reservation hunt. By season the total breaks down to 8 deer taken during the special season for paraplegic sportsmen, 2819 taken by archers, 8084 taken during the shotgun season and 1350 taken during the muzzleloading season.

“Snow cover statewide during the shotgun and muzzleloader seasons made for excellent hunting conditions,” reports Woytek. “This was also the first year for the newly lengthened muzzleloader season and the figures for that season increased accordingly for a season record.” Woytek says that the numbers also show that the antlerless deer permit system is working. “We have increased the number of antlerless deer permits available in areas of high deer densities while controlling the harvest of antlerless deer in areas where there is a concern about hunting pressure.”

Woytek reminds Bay State deer hunters that archers, shotgunners and muzzleloaders alike will continue to need an antlerless deer permit to take antlerless deer in any deer season. Permit applications are attached to traditional hunting and sporting licenses and must be submitted prior to July 16. Hunters purchasing licenses on line via may apply for an antlerless permit electronically.
