South Dakota’s 2003 West River deer season closes at sunset on Sunday, Nov. 23. However, West River deer hunters are reminded that all unfilled and unsold West River deer tags, with the exception of special buck licenses, will be valid one week longer from Nov. 24-30. This will include unfilled antlerless tags from the October season for Jones, Lyman and Mellette counties.

"Beginning Monday, Nov. 24, all unused and unsold ‘any deer’, ‘any whitetail’ and ‘any mule deer’ tags will be converted to their respective antlerless tags," said Game Management Specialist Ron Fowler. "This includes tags that are part of ‘two-tag’ licenses, but do not include West River special buck licenses." Fowler added that licenses are valid for public and private lands in the same units for which they were originally intended.

Another opportunity for using West River licenses that still remain unfilled or unsold after Nov. 30 will be during a re-opened season Jan. 1-11 but only on private lands not leased for public hunting.
