Emergency Elk Rule Proposed

To help alleviate potential elk depredation problems, a recent Game, Fish and Parks Commission proposal would expand boundaries of elk unit 404A and B on the east side of Wind Cave National Park and Custer State Park for the unit’s Dec. 1-31 season.

"Many of the elk that were originally in this unit have moved eastward, out of the unit, across S.D. Hwy. 79," said Game, Fish and Parks Game Management Specialist Ron Fowler. "By modifying the boundary and expanding the unit at this time, these elk will then be accessible to unit 404 elk hunters during the Dec. 1-31 season." Fowler noted that because of the elk’s eastward movement, hunters experienced very little success during the early Sept. 20-Oct. 12 season.

Hunters will be notified by letter of the expanded area.

The commission will hold a Nov. 19 teleconference to adopt this emergency rule.
