Valles Caldera Elk Raffles Draw 4,700+ Applicants
More than 4,700 applicants purchased raffle tickets for the 2002 bull elk hunts on the Valles Caldera National Preserve. The hunt is the first since the federal government purchased the former Baca Ranch two years ago. Raffle tickets sold for $25 each with no limit on the number of tickets each applicant could purchase. Tickets went on sale April 1, 2002 and the deadline for entries was June 29. Antlerless permits for the Valles Caldera were issued through the Department of Game and Fish public draw.
Over-The-Counter Cow Elk Licenses Will Not Be Available
A misprint in the 2002 Big Game Brochure indicated there were over-the-counter cow elk licenses available. However, as in past years, the Division of Wildlife will not be selling over-the-counter licenses for cow elk. The Division has never sold over-the-counter cow elk licenses, because biologists want to keep track of how many cows are in each game management unit in order to maintain viable breeding populations. Some units already are at objective for cow elk, so over-the-counter cow licenses would be problematic, since they are unlimited in number and could be used in an area where cows did not need to be culled.
Elk Licenses Available
Unclaimed elk licenses are now available for people who do not already have a 2002 permit. Those interested in the third drawing must apply via computer and will not sacrifice their eligibility or accrued preference if successful, according to state Game, Fish and Parks officials.
Wasatch Mountains Elk Hunts
The Wildlife Board approved issuing forty-five antlerless elk permits for an any-weapon season August 3-16, 2002. The Division of Wildlife Resources will send a letter to each hunter with special alerts, cautions and information about the hunt area.
Leftover Permits on Sale July 15
Permits not issued during the drawing for deer, elk and antelope controlled hunts will go on sale statewide July 15. Permits will go on sale at 10:00 a.m. Mountain time and 9:00 a.m. Pacific time. Leftovers include 1,095 deer permits, 984 elk permits and 435 turkey permits.
Elk Attacks Woman
A protective mother elk attacked and seriously injured a 71-year-old Estes Park woman late Monday afternoon after she unknowingly came too close to its calf. "The woman went out to do some gardening in her back yard, and she got too close to the calf elk, which was in hiding," said Rick Spowart, wildlife manager for the Colorado Division of Wildlife's Estes Park district. "She also didn't see the cow elk, which approached her from behind and started stomping on her."
2002-03 Elk Draw Permits
Persons who wish to apply for a 2002 Elk Quota Hunt must do so by buying an Elk Draw Permit. If drawn, no other permit costs will be involved. Hunters will be selected by random drawing. Hunters must comply with all applicable laws and regulations. A person cannot apply more than one time. The permit will be sold until 5/31/2002. You can apply here.
No CWD Postive Elk Found
The test results for 135 wild elk and 285 deer culled outside the Motherwell captive elk facility near Craig examined for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) showed that none of the elk tested positive for the disease.
Resident Elk, Deer, and Antelope Applications
It's time for resident hunters to plan their fall. Applications for limited quota elk, deer and antelope licenses must be received at the Wyoming Game and Fish Department's Cheyenne office by 5 p.m. May 31. Tom Rowe, the G&F's license draw manager, encourages hunters to apply early in the application period. "That way if there's something missing or that needs clarified on your application, we have plenty time to contact you," he said.
Elk, Deer, Antelope and Bear Controlled Hunts
Controlled hunt applications for deer, elk, antelope and black bear can be filed through the last day of May. Hunters can find application forms in the big game proclamation booklet recently delivered to license vendors and Fish and Game offices statewide. Hunting rules and seasons can also be found online at this site where hunters will be able to apply for hunts with the use of a credit card.
