Elk Season Delay Supported
A series of wildlife rule proposals dealing with a possible hunting season for the state’s recently established elk herd received general support from Wisconsin Spring Fish and Wildlife Rules Hearings and Conservation Congress county meeting attendees. Each of the proposals was endorsed by overwhelming margins, with more than 3,200 agreeing that any elk season should be delayed until the population reaches at least 200 animals.
Elk Survey Report
Jon DeBerti, Pennsylvania Game Commission elk biologist, today released the results of the recently completed elk survey, which estimates the state's current elk population to be 552 animals. Based on previous research, he noted that the herd should number between 650 and 700 animals by the time the 2003 elk hunting season is held in November.
National Elk Refuge Herd Count Up Slightly
National Elk Refuge, Game and Fish Department, Grand Teton National Park and Forest Service personnel conducted the annual elk classification count on the National Elk Refuge Feb. 25. A total of 6,992 elk were counted on feed at the refuge. This is slightly higher than last year’s count of 6,366 being fed.
2003 Big Game App Deadline Approaching
Hunters planning to hunt big game in Colorado this fall need to be aware of the application deadline of April 1 for limited deer, elk, pronghorn antelope, bear and moose licenses. This deadline applies to any hunter wanting to apply for a specific limited big game license or preference point. As usual, there will be over the counter elk and bear licenses available for many areas.
Sheep, Elk and Moose Apps Due March 19
Applications for this fall's bighorn sheep, elk and moose hunting seasons must be in the mail and postmarked before midnight March 19, reminds Carrie Whitney, licensing supervisor for the North Dakota Game and Fish Department.

Antelope, Deer, and Elk Seasons Set March 14th
The Nebraska Game and Parks Commissioners will set dates and regulations for the 2003 antelope, deer and elk hunting seasons, amend fish and wildlife regulations, and select the winner of the 2004 Habitat Stamp Art Contest at a March 14 meeting in Lincoln.
2003 Elk Seasons Proposed With Preference Point-Only Option
South Dakota’s 2003 firearms prairie, Black Hills firearms and archery elk seasons were recently proposed with additional licenses and a new option to apply only for a preference point.
New Record Elk Harvest
Hunters who participated in Colorado’s 2002 big game season recorded a new record elk harvest of 61,174 edging the old record of 60,120 set in 2000.
Big Game Bonus Point System Extended
The big game license drawing bonus point system has been expanded to include special deer and elk permits, and deer B, antelope and swan licenses. The bonus point system has been in place since 2001 for the nonresident combination license and resident and nonresident moose, sheep and goat license drawings.
