Elk Licenses Available

Unclaimed elk licenses are now available for people who do not already have a 2002 permit. Those interested in the third drawing must apply via computer and will not sacrifice their eligibility or accrued preference if successful, according to state Game, Fish and Parks officials.

"There were a number of successful elk applicants in the first two drawings who refused their cow tags," said License Office Supervisor Al Jockheck, "and those licenses become available in the third drawing. To apply for these cow licenses, applications must be submitted via the department's website at www.state.sd.us/gfp/BigGameApps/. Anyone who does not already have a 2002 license, including those who may have had an elk license in the past nine years, is eligible to apply. Whoever is successful for these tags will not sacrifice their eligibility or accrued preference and will be eligible to apply in next year's initial elk drawings."

Hunters may submit one application for each season (prairie, Black Hills, archery), but may only accept one license if successful for more than one season. Online applications will be accepted no later than midnight (CDT), July 1. Paper applications will not be accepted.
