Muzzleloader hunters took 225 deer during the recently completed early muzzleloader deer hunts.

Hunters took 101 deer at Salt Fork Wildlife Area, 82 deer at Wildcat Hollow, and 42 deer at Shawnee State Forest . Last year, hunters took a total of 210 deer for the season; 108 deer at Salt Fork Wildlife Area, 78 deer at Wildcat Hollow, and 24 deer at Shawnee State Forest

The season was open October 24 through October 29. Hunters were required to have a permit to participate and the permit designated whether the hunter could take an antlered or antlerless deer.

The early muzzleloader hunt on three areas was a controlled, permit only hunt for the first time this fall. The new permit system will help biologists track hunter participation, harvest, and interest in this early muzzleloader hunt. Permits will also help biologists manage for a healthy deer population in the areas involved, by providing an opportunity to kill both antlered and antlerless deer.

With an estimated deer population of 650,000 statewide, hunters have good opportunity for success. Archery season opened October 1 and runs through January 31, 2006 . Deer gun season will open November 28 and extend through December 4, 2005 , and a statewide muzzleloader season is December 27.

For additional information on all of Ohio ’s deer hunting seasons and requirements, hunters are advised to review the 2005-2006 Ohio Hunting and Trapping Regulations.
