Following a review of the use of driver’s license information by state agencies, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has determined that individual DNR license and registration data is nonpublic.

The DNR computerized licensing and registration system was developed by direct link to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety’s computerized driver’s license system. DPS has reviewed the use of driver’s license information by state agencies. It has been determined that most of the data in the DNR’s electronic licensing and registration database are driver’s license data under federal law, which restricts dissemination of that data.

DNR Commissioner Gene Merriam said his agency will consider constructing its own license database that is independent of the DPS driver’s license database.
