Delaware Spring Turkey Hunters Have 8th Straight Record Season

For the eighth straight year, Delaware's wild turkey season has set a new harvest record – bringing more prominence to one of the state's most successful wildlife restoration programs as it coincides with DNREC's Division of Fish & Wildlife celebrating its first century of conservation service. The spring wild turkey season tallied 487 birds, surpassing last year’s harvest by more than 100 gobblers, and included a 25½-pound tom shot by a first-time turkey hunter that was the largest in the state this year.

Delaware 2011 Spring Turkey Check Stations Set

The 2011 Delaware spring turkey hunting season opens Saturday, April 9 and runs through Saturday, May 7. Hunting hours are a half-hour before sunrise until 1 p.m. Hunters are reminded that all birds taken must be checked by 2:30 p.m. on the day of the hunt at an authorized turkey check station.

Prior to the regular season opener, youth ages 10-15 and non-ambulatory disabled hunters will have a special one-day hunt opportunity on Saturday, April 2 on private lands statewide. Young hunters must be accompanied by an adult age 21 or older.

No CWD Found in Delaware Deer
Nearly 600 brain and lymph node tissue samples taken from white-tailed deer in all three counties of Delaware in 2009 showed no evidence of chronic wasting disease (CWD), the DNREC Division of Fish and Wildlife announced.
Delaware Offers Free Conservation Day Camp
Children ages 8 to 14 are invited to learn more about our natural resources and the outdoor activities our state has to offer when the Delaware Division of Fish and Wildlife hosts its annual Camp Awareness from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 15 at the Redden State Forest Headquarters Tract near Georgetown. The camp is offered free of charge.
