The 2003-2004 deer season in the state of Louisiana is winding down. By the end of this week, the firearm seasons in six of the state's eight deer hunting areas will be closed, leaving just bow hunters in the woods.

The southwest portion of the state, Areas 3 and 8, will close entirely to deer hunting on January 15 when their archery seasons close. The firearms portion of the season in these areas closed at the end of December.

In the remainder of the state, archery season will continue through the end of January. However, in Area 2, muzzleloader season will end on January 16. Modern firearms season closed on January 9. In Area 4, the muzzleloader season will close on January 18, with the modern firearms season closing on January 9. Areas 5 and 7 have been limited to bow-hunting only since the first of the year.

The exceptions are Areas 1 and 6. Modern firearms in these extreme eastern areas will close on January 18 and muzzleloader season will close on January 25. Bow seasons in these two areas will also continue until January 31.

Hunters looking to take advantage of the closing days of the season are encouraged to double check season dates and regulations before heading into the woods. Hunting regulations pamphlets can be found at any local license vendor or from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. They may also be found at the LDWF website at www.wlf.state.la.us.
