Deer Hunting Dates Announced for Wye Island

Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) State Forest and Park Service today announced the dates for archery and muzzleloading deer hunts at Wye Island Natural Resources Management Area (N.R.M.A.). As in the past, all hunts will be by permit only.

This year's dates for archery hunts are from Oct. 5, 2002 through Oct. 16, 2002 and Oct. 22, 2002 through Nov. 27, 2002. Sundays and Mondays are excluded. All archery permits will be issued daily on a first-come first-serve basis. Permits will be limited to 25 archery deer hunters per day. Hunters must sign-in and out using the self-registration system at the Wye Island check-in station. All deer harvested at Wye Island as part of the archery hunt will be considered part of the daily and season bag limit. All deer harvested must be checked-in at Wye Island. Bag limits for the Wye Island archery hunts follow the state guidelines with the following exception - An archery hunter may hunt for and harvest antlered deer only if they have already harvested an antlerless deer in Region "D" for the 2002-03 bow season. * Bowhunters must take (2) antlerless deer before they can take a second antlered deer. A muzzleloading deer hunt will be held Oct. 17-19. On Oct. 17, the muzzleloading hunt will be limited to Physically Challenged Hunters. On Oct. 18, the muzzleloader hunt will be limited to a Women's Only Hunt and on Oct. 19, the muzzleloader hunt will be limited to a Youth Only Hunt. Muzzleloading applications for these three special hunts must be received at Wye Island by the close of business (4:30 p.m.) on Sept. 13. Permits will be selected by random drawing on Sept. 18, at 2 p.m.

A $5 non-refundable service charge must accompany each muzzleloader application. One application per hunter with a maximum of three applications per group hunt -- staple all group applications together. Qualified hunters can only apply for one special hunt.

A muzzleloading deer hunt will, open to all hunters, will be held Dec. 9-14. Muzzleloading applications must be received at Wye Island by the close of business (4:30 p.m.) on Oct. 25. Permits will be selected by random drawing on Oct. 31, at 2 p.m.

A $5 non-refundable service charge must accompany each muzzleloader application. One application per hunter with a maximum of three applications per group hunt ? staple all group applications together.

Note: Separate applications, along with the $5 fee, must be sent for October and December muzzleloader hunts on Wye Island NRMA.
