California DFG Seeking Comments on 2011 Hunting Regulations

The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) is holding a meeting to solicit public input regarding the development of hunting regulations for 2011. The meeting will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 18 in the Wildlife Branch Conference Room, 1811 9th St., Sacramento.

California Plans 2 Lake Sonoma Fall Turkey Hunts

The permit drawing application deadline is approaching for two fall turkey hunts planned for the Lake Sonoma Turkey Hunt Program. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is providing this special hunting opportunity in cooperation with the Department of Fish and Game (DFG). The hunts will be held on USACE property surrounding Lake Sonoma in Sonoma County.

California's San Pablo Bay Marshland Receives Funding for Restoration

State and federal agencies have settled an environmental injury case with Chevron, providing $2.85 million to restore 200-plus acres of San Pablo Bay wetlands. The settlement agreement compensates for natural resource injuries from past contaminant releases from Chevron's Richmond refinery into Castro Cove, an isolated San Pablo Bay inlet.

California WCB Approves Funding For Environmental Improvement Projects

The California Wildlife Conservation Board (WCB) approved more than $21 million in funding to help restore and protect wildlife habitat throughout the state. The 16 funded projects will provide benefits to fish and wildlife species, including some endangered species, and increase public access to these lands. The funding for these projects comes from recent bond initiatives approved by the voters to help preserve and protect California's natural resources.

California Offers Apprentice Deer Hunts in Santa Clara County

The application deadline is approaching for young hunters who wish to enter the drawing for two guided apprentice deer hunts at South Valley Ranch. The California Department of Fish and Game (DFG), in cooperation with the California Deer Association, is providing these hunts for two apprentice deer hunters on Sept. 18 and 19. Applications will be accepted until Aug. 30, and the two successful applicants will be notified by Sept. 10.

California Furlough Days May Affect Hunters Who Wait Until Last Minute

Bear hunters planning to scour the deer A zone for bear on the first day of the season must plan ahead this year. Because of state furloughs on the second, third and fourth Fridays of the month, 2010 season bear tags must be purchased before 5 p.m. on Aug. 12 in order to hunt on the Aug. 14 A-zone general bear season opener. Hunters who wait to buy their tags until the day before the opener will find that Department of Fish and Game (DFG) offices are closed, and tags will be unavailable until the offices reopen for business on Monday morning.

California Begins Study on Black-tail Deer Decline

A new study is under way to determine why Black-tailed deer populations in some areas of northern California have declined over the past 20 years. The Department of Fish and Game (DFG), the University of California, Davis and several doctoral candidates recently began a three-year study of habitat changes, predation and land use patterns affecting black-tailed deer in Mendocino County. The decline in the harvest of black-tailed deer over the past 20 years is well-documented.

California DFG Offers Hunts on the Chimineas Unit

The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) is offering draws for three controlled hunting opportunities on the Chimineas Unit of the Carrizo Plains Ecological Reserve in San Luis Obispo County. Twenty-five permits will be drawn for each hunt and each permit is good for two hunters.

California Big Game Tag Deadline June 2nd
Hunters who plan to hunt deer, elk, antelope or bighorn sheep have only a few weeks left to turn in an application. Applications must be received at the California Department of Fish and Game's (DFG) License and Revenue Branch in Sacramento by 5 p.m. on June 2. Drawing results will be available by phone and online on June 23.
