California Department of Fish and Game and the Humane Society Offer Reward for Mountain Lion Poachers

A $5,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of poachers who killed a mountain lion in the Santa Monica Mountains last month.

The Department of Fish and Game’s (DFG)CAL-TIP line is offering a $2,500 reward and the Humane Society of theUnited Statesand the Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust is matching that amount.

Correct Dates for North Coast Black Brant, California Hunting Season

The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) reminds hunters the north coast black brant hunting season is open from Nov. 7, 2011 through Dec. 6, 2011. An error in the California Waterfowl Association’s 2011-12 Waterfowl Hunter’s Pocket Guide shows the season beginning and ending a day earlier.

Recreational Spiny Lobster Season Opens Saturday in California

The sport season for California’s spiny lobster opens at one minute after midnight, Saturday, Oct. 1, and continues through March 21, 2012.

Interior Secretary Announces More than $20 Million for Wetlands Grants for Migratory Birds, More than $10 Million for Wildlife Refuge Acquisitions

Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced the Migratory Bird Conservation Commission (Commission) today approved spending more than $9 million from the Migratory Bird Conservation Fund to protect an estimated 5,550 acres of waterfowl habitat on five units of the National Wildlife Refuge System.  The Commission also approved $20.7 million in federal funding for grants to conserve nearly 100,000 acres of wetlands and associated habitats in 16 states through the North American Wetlands Conservation Act (NAWCA).

Fall Pig Hunts Offered in Yolo County California

The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) will conduct eight permit-only wild pig hunts on Bobcat Ranch in Yolo County between Oct. 24 and Nov. 18.A total of 64 wild pig hunters will have access to the private property during two archery hunts, two apprentice hunts and four general method hunts. All are two-day hunts.

California Application Deadline Approaching for Game Warden Academy

Applications are now being accepted for the Department of Fish and Game (DFG) Warden Academy at Butte College in Oroville. The academy will begin in January 2013 and is scheduled to graduate in September 2013. The application deadline is Nov. 4, 2011.

The deadline for current peace officers to apply for a shortened lateral academy is Sept. 16, 2011 for an academy scheduled to begin in September 2012.

California Mistakenly Mails 1000 Duplicate Deer Tags

The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) is recalling approximately 1,000 duplicate deer tags inadvertently sent out to hunters who participated in this year’s Big Game Draw. Of the nearly 53,000 tags printed and issued by Active Networks on behalf of DFG, approximately two percent were inadvertently printed more than once and sent out in separate mailings causing hunters to receive one or more duplicate tags. These duplicate tags must be returned to DFG and cannot be used for the take of additional deer.

California DFG Offering Wild Pig Hunts on the Chimineas Unit

The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) will provide hunting opportunities on the Chimineas Units of the Carrizo Plain Ecological Reserve in 2011 and 2012. This will include additional opportunities for mobility impaired hunters.

California DFG Offering Apprentice Deer Hunt on the Chimineas Unit

The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) is offering a draw for an apprentice deer hunt on the Chimineas Unit of the Carrizo Plain Ecological Reserve. The two-day hunt, which is being offered in cooperation with the California Deer Association (CDA), will be held Sept. 17-18 on the 30,000-acre reserve in San Luis Obispo County.

California Wardens Stop Deer Poaching Ring

California game wardens served two search warrants on members of a deer poaching ring early Thursday, resulting in the arrest of three Stockton men. Wardens arrested Thongseuth Khounchanh, 58, Ti Sila, 51, and Bounleuna Sysenglath, 59, as they returned from an all-night poaching trip in El Dorado County. The men were charged with killing deer and selling deer meat for profit.
