California South Chimineas Special Hunts

The reserve's South Chimineas Unit will be open to walk on hunting for dove, rabbit, quail, and wild pig hunting Wednesdays and Saturdays September 1-15 and throughout December, January and February during the state open seasons for each species.

All walk on hunters must obtain a free access permit. Permits are available at the Caliente Peak trailhead and Feed Lot Parking Lot. Access is available from Highway 166. The North Chimineas Unit is closed to walk on hunting.

Hunts allowing drive on access for quail, dove, rabbit and pig are available through special drawings. Hunt dates and application deadlines for drive on hunts are listed as follows:

  • * North Chimineas Unit, Sept. 8-9, for dove, pig and rabbit. Applications must be received by Aug. 9. Include "Attention: September Chimineas Hunt" on the envelope.
  • * South Chimineas Unit, Dec. 8-9, for dove, quail, pig and rabbit. Applications must be received by Nov. 8. Include "Attention: December Chimineas Hunt" on the envelope.
  • * South Chimineas Unit, Jan. 12-13, 2008, for quail, pig and rabbit. Applications must be received by Dec. 6.
  • Include "Attention: January Chimineas Hunt" on the envelope.
  • * Five additional permits for each hunt will be allotted to mobility-impaired hunters. Applicants must write "Special Draw" on the attention line of the application. Successful applicants must have a Mobility Impaired Disabled Persons Motor Vehicle Hunting License or a standard handicap vehicle placard or license plate on the day of the hunt. If more than five applicants apply, there will be a drawing among the mobility-impaired applicants.

Twenty-five permits will be drawn for each hunt and each permit allows two hunters to participate.

One application per hunt may be submitted. There are no preprinted applications; applicants must send in a self-addressed envelope and a letter or postcard with the hunter’s name, address, telephone number, hunting license number and hunt desired. All applications must be received by 5 p.m. on the hunt due date at California Department of Fish and Game, 20 Lower Ragsdale Drive, Suite 100, Monterey, CA. 93940. Applications received late, incomplete, or without a self-addressed envelope will not be accepted.

Successful applicants will receive additional information, maps and special regulations prior to the hunt.
