California DFG Offers Hunts on the Chimineas Unit

The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) is offering draws for three controlled hunting opportunities on the Chimineas Unit of the Carrizo Plains Ecological Reserve in San Luis Obispo County. Twenty-five permits will be drawn for each hunt and each permit is good for two hunters.

Application deadlines for drive-on hunts on the Chimineas Unit are:

  • Sept. 11-12, 2010 for dove, pig and rabbit on the North Chimineas Unit. Applications must be received by Aug. 13.
  • Dec. 11-12, 2010 for dove, quail, pig and rabbit on the South Chimineas Unit. Applications must be received by Nov. 12.
  • Jan. 8-9, 2011 for, quail, pig and rabbit on the South Chimineas Unit. Applications must be received by Dec. 10.
  • Five additional permits for each hunt will be allotted to mobility-impaired hunters. The application process is the same as for the regular drawings. Applicants should add the words "Special Draw" on the attention line. Successful applicants must have a Mobility Impaired Disabled Persons Motor Vehicle Hunting License or a standard handicap vehicle placard or license plate on the day of the hunt. If more than five applications are received, there will be a drawing among the mobility-impaired applicants.

Applicants must submit a self-addressed envelope and a letter or postcard with the hunter's name, address, telephone number and hunting license number. Please be sure to note the hunt desired on the front of the envelope. Only one application per hunt may be submitted.

All applications must be received by 5 p.m. on the respective due date at DFG, 20 Lower Ragsdale Drive, Suite 100, Monterey, CA 93940. Incomplete applications and those received late or without a self-addressed envelope will not be entered. Successful applicants will receive additional information, including maps and special regulations, prior to the hunt.

Hunting for dove, rabbit, quail and wild pig will be permitted on Wednesdays and Saturdays from Sept. 1-15 and all of December, January and February during the appropriate seasons on the South Chimineas Unit. All hunting and access to the grounds is prohibited in October and November. Hunters must access the South Chimineas Unit on foot from Highway 166. All hunters must have free access permits, which are available at the DFG parking lot at the entrance to the unit and at the Caliente Peak trailhead.
