Grizzly Bears Continue to Stay Active in Wyoming- Hunters Need to Stay Alert

Mid-November usually marks the official denning period for grizzly bears, but until then, they will remain very active in their search for food-creating challenging conditions for hunters.

On Oct. 3, 2011, two hunters in two separate areas encountered grizzly bears; both suffered minor injuries as a result. In each case, the hunters surprised a bear, which then became aggressive.

Grizzly Captured on Kuhns Wildlife Management Area Moved to Elk Mountain Montana

A sub-adult male grizzly was captured at Kuhns Wildlife Management Area (WMA) yesterday morning after it had an encounter with a bowhunter on September 19. Kuhns WMA is a popular youth hunting area located about 10 miles northwest of Kalispell. Grizzly bears have been known to use the Kuhns WMA area in the past, especially during spring and summer.

Montana FWP Euthanizes Troublesome Grizzly Bear

A 10-year-old grizzly bear with a history of killing livestock was euthanized this week after it was caught killing cattle southeast of Red Lodge.

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks wildlife biologist Shawn Stewart of Red Lodge said the 400-pound male bear was captured Friday by federal Wildlife Services agents after it killed cattle in a rancher’s pasture.

Cleveland Metro Parks Zoo to Receive Grizzly Bear Cubs from Wyoming

Two Cody area grizzly bear cubs are on a journey to the Cleveland Metro Parks Zoo, in Cleveland, Ohio.

The male and female cubs of the year, were orphaned after their mother was euthanized when she became a chronic problem bear to residents living in the Lower South Fork Shoshone River valley. 

Wyoming Continues to Monitor Grizzly Bears

As part of ongoing efforts required under the Endangered Species Act to monitor the population of grizzly bears in the Yellowstone Ecosystem, the Wyoming Game & Fish Department (WGFD) is informing the public that pre-baiting and scientific trapping operations will begin in two locations of the Bridger Teton National Forest near Moran Junction.

The WGFD will begin trapping efforts in the Blackrock/Spread Creek area between July 6 and July 25. A second trapping effort will take place in the Fox Park area of the Teton Wilderness between July 26 and August 12.

Montana Seeks Info on Dead Grizzly Bear

Information is being sought on a dead grizzly bear found on the east side of Hungry Horse Reservoir. The grizzly bear was found by two bear hunters late last week and reported to FWP Wardens. Wardens retrieved the grizzly on May 21 and verified that it had been shot.

Interagency Bear Committee to Meet in Montana - Jan 19-20

The Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee's annual winter meeting will be January 19 and 20 in Missoula, Montana.

The multi-agency committee is responsible for grizzly bear recovery in the continental United States and adjacent Canadian provinces.

The meeting will take place at the Hilton Garden Inn at 3720 North Reserve Street. The session start at 9:30 a.m. on January 19, and at 8 a.m. on January 20. The public is invited to attend and a public comment period will be provided at the end of each day.

Alaska Lengthens Grizzly Bear Season - Now Opens Aug 10th

In an effort to help slow the decline of North Slope muskox populations, the Board of Game voted yesterday to extend the grizzly bear season and waive a permit requirement for resident hunters in Unit 26B.

The Board of Game met in an emergency meeting on Wednesday to consider changes to bear hunting regulations in Unit 26B on the North Slope.

Alaska Permits Available for Interior Hunts
Surplus drawing permits for moose hunting in Interior Alaska will be issued on a first come-first served basis to hunters whose faxed applications are received at the Fairbanks Fish and Game office beginning April 26, 2010. The application deadline is June 10.
