Pennsylvania Furtaker Seasons Highlighted by Split Bobcat Season

A split season for bobcat trappers and hunters highlight this year’s furbearer seasons, according to Pennsylvania Game Commission officials.

In April, the Board of Game Commissioners established a separate bobcat trapping season (Dec. 17-Jan. 8) and hunting season (Jan. 17-Feb. 7). However, both seasons only will be open in Wildlife Management Units 2A, 2C, 2E, 2F, 2G, 3A, 3B, 3C, 3D, 4A, 4D and 4E.

Trappers also will have the opportunity to participate in the second season to harvest a fishers, which will be held Dec. 17-22 in WMUs 2C 2D, 2E and 2F.

West Virginia Trappers and Hunters Must Tag Furbearers

Trappers harvesting beaver, bobcat, fisher and otter are reminded they must present the whole animal or pelt to an official game checking station or West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (DNR) representative for checking within 30 days after the close of the respective season. A tag provided by the checking station shall be attached to the whole animal or pelt until it has been sold, tanned or mounted.

Wisconsin Black Bear/Bobcat Online Reporting Successul

The first year of an online site developed to collect reports of black bear and bobcat sightings from citizens produced more than 800 reports. This information has been valuable in documenting presence and range expansion for both species, according to wildlife biologists.

Utah Trapper Education Classes Offered

Utah's trapping seasons aren't that far away. For example, if the Utah Wildlife Board approves the date, permits to take bobcats will go on sale Oct. 3, 2011.

Kentucky Man Charged With Illegal Trafficking of Bobcats and Hawks

A Breathitt County man was arraigned in federal court earlier this week on four felony charges alleging violations of the Federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

Danny Gayheart, 32, of Noctor, pleaded not guilty to the charges on Monday, July 18. The charges were filed May 5 in a federal indictment, following a 17-month undercover investigation by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and conservation officers with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources.

Biologists Confirm Over 100 Bobcat Sightings in Ohio During 2010

Increased evidence of bobcats living in Ohio’s southeastern counties continues with the confirmation of 106 sightings by state wildlife officials during 2010, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Wildlife. The reports show an increase from the 92 verified sightings in 2009.

The bobcat is listed as an endangered species in Ohio and protected by state law.
