Montana Black Bear Season to Close in Bear Management Unit 510

The hunting of all black bears in Bear Management Unit 510, in portions of Bighorn, Carbon and Yellowstone Counties, will close one-half hour after sunset on Tuesday, September 20, 2011.

The order halting the hunt came shortly after Fish, Wildlife & Parks officials received word that the pre-established harvest quota for the district had been met.

Georgia Poachers Plead Guilty to Killing Female Bear

Four out of five defendants charged with crimes related to killing a female black bear out of season in Fannin County pled guilty and will be paying fines totaling $2,700.

In March 2010, rangers with Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division, obtained arrest warrants on five suspects involved in the illegal killing of a female black bear with newborn cubs. The investigation began when the dead bear was found in Murray County on March 3. Two cubs were dropped off at McCayesville veterinarian later that week. 

New Michigan State Law Allows 10-Year-Olds to Hunt Deer, Elk or Bear With a Firearm

A change in state law that took effect Sept. 1 makes it legal for 10- and 11-year olds to hunt deer, bear or elk with firearms in Michigan, the Department of Natural Resources announced.

The change is not reflected in the 2011 Hunting and Trapping Digest as the publication went to press before the law was changed.

The regulations change was part of the Hunter Heritage Act, which creates a new mentored hunting program and eliminates the minimum age requirements for hunting in 2012.

New Jersey Black Bear Permit Lottery Information

The NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife black bear permit lottery application period will open on September 15 and remain open until 11:59 p.m on October 15.

Colorado Bear Found Shot Near Silver Circle Road

Colorado Parks and Wildlife is offering a $500 reward for information that might help solve a poaching crime in Custer County. 
 
A dead bear was found Aug. 29 near Silver Circle Road off Oak Creek Grade. 
 
"It appears the bear was shot indiscriminately," said District Wildlife Manager Justin Krall. "It looks like it was shot sometime the week of Aug. 21."
