2011 New Hampshire Deer and Bear Hunting Season Results

The preliminary numbers for New Hampshire's recent deer and bear hunting seasons are in.  The estimated statewide deer kill for New Hampshire’s 2011 season was 11,167 deer, up 14% from 2010 (9,759 deer) and the highest harvest since 2007.  It appears that the last weeks of the season were quite successful, because as late as Thanksgiving weekend, the estimated take was running just 4% above 2010 levels at that point in the season.

New West Virginia Senior Lifetime Hunting and Fishing License Available

The new Senior Lifetime Hunting, Trapping and Fishing License, which becomes effective January 1, 2012, is now available for purchase, according to DNR Director Frank Jezioro.  The one-time fee for the Class XS License is $25.

Minnesota Black Bear Researchers Asking Public for Information

Minnesota black bear researchers are interested in any information the public may have about presently occupied bear dens in northwestern Minnesota. Since 2007, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the University of Minnesota have been conducting a cooperative bear study in Kittson, Marshall, Pennington and Red Lake counties.

Hunters Take Four Black Bears During Kentucky's 2011 Season

Hunters took four black bears during Kentucky's third season for the bruins, held during the weekend of Dec. 10-11.

Neil Perkins, of Hallie, Ky., took a 350-pound male bear in Letcher County that is the heaviest bear taken since Kentucky's first bear season in 2009, said Steven Dobey, bear program coordinator for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. Hunters took two bears in Letcher County and two in Harlan County.

Pennsylvania Preliminary 2011 Bear Harvest Ranks Second

Pennsylvania Game Commission Executive Director Carl G. Roe today announced preliminary bear harvest results from the state’s three recently concluded seasons show that hunters harvested 3,968 bears, which would rank the total harvest as the second highest in Pennsylvania history.

Chittenden, Vermont Man Pleads Guilty on Bear Poaching Charge

Jake Duprey, 27, of Chittenden pled guilty on November 14, 2011 in Rutland Superior Court Criminal Division to attempting to take a black bear by illegal means.

Duprey was apprehended on September 20, 2011 by State Game Wardens Lt. Don Isabelle and Dale Whitlock as he was observed checking a baited steel cable foot snare. Duprey admitted to the wardens that he had baited the snare with grain and donuts as well as setting the snare in an attempt to catch a bear.

Rockport, New Jersey WMA Refuge Status Lifted for Deer and Bear Hunting

The NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife is informing hunters that the refuge status for the Rockport WMA will be lifted to allow deer and bear hunting beginning December 5, 2011. As always, the Game Farm proper (area around the pens and buildings) remains closed to all hunting. The pheasant refuge status for the 380-acre area posted as restricted remains and is closed to pheasant hunting. It is hoped that additional pheasants can be recovered in the coming months as breeding stock for next year's production.

State's Third Annual Black Bear Hunt Begins Dec.10 In Three Eastern Kentucky Counties

Opening day of Kentucky's newest big game season arrives earlier this year.

On Dec. 10, hunters can participate in a two-day quota hunt for black bears in Harlan, Letcher and Pike counties.

"This year the hunt occurs on the second weekend in December, rather than the third weekend as it has since 2009," said Steven Dobey, bear program coordinator for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. "Hopefully this earlier date will avoid overlap with early season snow storms and increase hunter success."

2012 Wisconsin Spring Turkey, Black Bear Permit Application Deadline Dec. 10

Wild turkey and black bear hunters have until close of business on Dec. 10 to apply for available permits for the 2012 Wisconsin spring turkey hunting season and the 2012 black bear hunting season.
